I can travel the multiverse
―America explaining her powers to Doctor Strange and Wong[src]

America Chavez is a Marvel Comics character who appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She also appears in the Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors animated film.

America Chavez was created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta.

Background[]

America Chavez is a young girl from outside of our Multiverse – specifically, the Utopian Parallel, a singular dimension unlike anything we've ever known. America is being hunted for her power – the ability to open star-shaped holes in reality, allowing her to travel through the Multiverse and into other realities.

America opened her first portal as a child and has spent years traveling through the Multiverse since she first fell into a universe that bears a resemblance to ours. During her accidental travels, she's traveled across 72 universes, on a journey to find control over her powers.[1]

Personality[]

America is shown to be very adventurous as she had the ability to travel to different universes and shown to be quick cocky when it comes to her teasing people as seen when she teases 616 Doctor Strange about not knowing anything to do with the multiverse. However, despite this, America is also shown to easily get scared. which she picked up as a young girl when she saw a bee land on her hand and the fear caused her to use her powers for the first time. This is also shown when she meets the Scarlet Witch and the alternate version that is possessed, as Wanda tries all she can to kill America and take her power. America is also shown like this when she meets 616 Strange in fear that he will betray her like his alternate self did when they were in Gap Junction, even though 616 Strange saved her life. However, after spending time with this variant of Strange, America became inspired by his words, which helps her fight back against the Scarlet Witch and learns how to control her power. Due to their adventures together, America becomes very close to Strange and vice-versa, almost seeing him as a father-figure and having learnt not to be so afraid of things around her or her own power. Also since America has been on her own for at least 10 years, she has learnt how to take good care of her self and be independent, which explains her struggles to trust a alternate version of Doctor Strange.

Powers[]

  • Multiversal Travel: America has the ability to open portals to other universes without the multiverse, a power she has had since she was a young girl.
  • Magic: Towards the end of the film, America learnt how to use a sling ring to open portals, although she was new to it and not very experienced in that way of opening portals.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness[]

In her live action debut, America Chavez is saved by Stephen Strange/Doctor Strange at the wedding of Christine Palmer. Strange saves Chavez when she is attacked by a giant monster, and Stephen reveals that he saw her in his dream the previous night. Speaking with Wong and Stephen, America reveals what Strange saw wasn't a dream, but another universe where the Doctor Strange from the "dream" tried to drain America of her powers.

Worrying about America's powers, Doctor Strange goes to visit Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch for help, but she reveals she is the one who sent the monster after America in a way of Chavez taking Wanda to a universe where she can be with her children. Seeing that the Darkhold has overtaken Wanda's mind, Strange refuses to hand America over to Wanda, for the sake of the kid's safety.

America later takes Doctor Strange to Earth-838, where she reveals through a memory device, that America lost her mothers at a young age due to not being able to control her powers. Strange comforts Chavez in belief that she will be reunited with her mom's. The Scarlet Witch soon finds America and almost kills her until Wanda realises she is in a world where her son's are alive with their mother, Wanda. Wanda threatens America to demand to know what she had done as Billy and Tommy have seen Wanda being scary.

In Wanda's fortress, America fights Wanda after encouragement from Doctor Strange who is dream walking into 838's corpse of himself. Chavez unlashes her true power and takes the upper hand against Wanda, who eventually sees what she has become. America watches as Wanda destroys the Darkhold and her fortress, ending her life in the process.

America is last seen training at the rebuilt Kama Taj before she departs through a portal to go to a different universe. However, before she leaves, America tells Doctor Strange that she is glad she fell into his universe, which he reciprocates.

Trivia[]

  • America Chavez is confirmed to be LGBT in the MCU.[2]
  • This is the first live-action adaption of America Chavez.
  • America Chavez was going to originally debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where she would participate in the battle at Liberty Island, and meet Peter Parker's friends, before the idea was discarded due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]
  • She seems to have the skills of a master thief as she managed to steal Doctor Strange's sling ring without him knowing.
  • In the comics, America Chavez is a Multiverse-hopping superhero who goes by the name Miss America. Chavez's original backstory was that she came from a special dimension called the Utopian Parallel, but this has been retconned. Her current backstory is that the Utopian Parallel is actually just a small island on Earth that had a testing facility, and her mothers were scientists, not superheroes. All the fantastical stuff about the Utopian Parallel was just Chavez's imagination which she used to cope with the trauma.
  • Xochitl Gomez revealed in an interview that America is 14 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, meaning she was born in 2010.[1]
  • She is the first major character within the MCU to be raised by two women.
