Melee Weapons and Chainsaws are capable of killing zombies that would otherwise explode upon being killed by a firearm (for example, the Bloat) without causing them to detonate. They also ignore all PvE armor by default, meaning they will bypass any protection employed by zombies to directly damage them.
Chainsaws are capable of dealing cleave damage to up to 2 extra enemies; these enemies take 12.5% of the original damage, allowing chainsaws to deal up to 125% of its original DPS.

The Ripsaw G12 is the result of their work so far. Formerly a rescue saw, mechanics have stripped the saw of its protective plastic blade cover, and rigged it with a more powerful engine designed to provide much higher torque than what was once considered safe for use. A massive chainsaw inspired by the "chain swords" from many fantasy RPG games. Fairview mechanics designed this monster out of a desire to combine the brute impacting force of a sword with the continuous destructive ability of a chainsaw. Starting with a scrapped Steel 090, mechanics lengthened the guide bar to roughly the same length as a Katana, and bolted a leather-bound pipe to the base to act as a hilt. In order to make it possible to wield the saw like a sword, mechanics reduced the engine size by half to reduce its weight. Razor-edged carbon-steel teeth were used on the chain to compensate for the reduced RPM of the engine. Added November 6th, 2014.

Different documents and development logs showed that this weapon entered development post-outbreak, in the secret facility located in the southeast area. Considered a combat chainsaw due to its powerful internal motor and fanged blade, capable of shredding the armor seen on the infected as if it were simple meat. As seen on several weapons of this indolie, the Sharktooth Ripper (codename Megadoldon XR-SAW according to the blueprints found) features a companion scabbard which automatically cleans the blade and teeth of the saw with a coating of oil to maintain it in perfect condition. The science team along with the gunsmiths have modified it to dispense the N-9/2025 compound instead to maximize its effectiveness against the mutants found on Fairview, mainly in the so called "Death Row". Mechanics haven't neglected attention for chainsaws by any means-- the selection of newly-crafted weapons also includes the Buzzblade RN8, a chainsaw that eliminates several of the weaknesses found in pre-existing chainsaws. This chainsaw's primary difference from its predecessors lies in the design of its chain-- the teeth of the Buzzblade have a design similar to that of a circular saw, being slanted and sharpened to fine points, in order to slice through infected much more effectively than would be possible with a conventional chain. There has been some confusion regarding the purpose of the short blade affixed underneath the engine housing of this chainsaw, but mechanics involved in its development have hinted that it works as a pivoting flint, allowing survivors to hone the teeth on the chain when they begin to dull from extensive use.
