Andre "Dre" Johnson is the main protagonist of the American sitcom television series, Black-ish. He is portrayed by Anthony Anderson.

Character Info[]

Dre considers himself the family patriarch and when he looks at his life - he sees a beautiful wife and five kids living happily in their colonial home in the 'burbs. But when he looks a little closer -- have the trappings of success brought too much assimilation for this black family? The world he sees has a much different lens than the one he would like his family to look through.

Politics[]

Dre's politics are left leaning and he is a staunch democrat. In spite of this he has many socially conservative political views. Perhaps the most pervasive one of these traits is his view of himself as "the man of the house". He also had a disturbingly sexist reaction when he found out his oldest daughter was sexually active, in comparison to when he found out Junior was as well.

He doesn't think black people can be racist. However, a recurring trend is that people think he is a colorist. He thinks of himself as "darkskin," something strongly debated by his coworkers and Diane. He tends to make offhanded light skin jokes or insults to his wife and Junior; ironically, in advertising, he choses a light skin family candidate for campaigns. This issue was put into focus twice.

Personality[]

Dre is a very paranoid person, as he has weapons like nunchucks, machetes, and switchblade stashed in his house, as well as being on first-name terms with all the police officers that patrol his neighborhood. He tends to think of himself as the "alpha male" in his household until he's checked by his wife or father. He is extremely confident in himself, coming across as arrogant, self-centered, and egotistical (something he passed to his oldest child, Zoey). In reality, he can be a bit of a punk and a coward, something constantly noted by Pops, his cousin June Bug, Ruby, and Diane. He plays favorites among his kids and can be emotionally abusive on some occasions, usually with Junior (it was only once time that it actually got physical). However, at heart, he is very sensitive and caring for his family, even if it never appears that way.

He is very proud of his Black heritage and hopes to pass that pride onto his kids, but fears that suburban life has "softened" them up. Adding to his stress is that Dre works in a toxic, sexist, and extremely racist work environment (calling it Boston in the eighties) and refers to his coworkers as "idiots," "dumdums," or "insane" when they give him twisted advice on how to address an issue going on in his household. He usually knows when to differentiate bad advice from wrong advice while giving them daily lectures on "Black stuff," though on occasion he does when the advice isn't typically seen as "crazy."
