There were 6,065 state legislative seats up for election on November 6, 2018, in 46 states. This page analyzes incumbents defeated in those elections. An incumbent may be defeated at two points in an election cycle: during a primary and during a general election.[1]

In 2018, 484 incumbents lost their re-election bids: 318 in general elections and 166 in primaries.[2] This was more than in 2016 (362) and 2014 (382) but equal to 2012 (484).

Incumbents defeated in general elections

In state legislative general elections, 318 incumbents lost to challengers, 6.8% of incumbents running for re-election. This was the largest number of incumbents defeated in even-year general elections since 2010 (495).

In 2018 general elections:

  • 51 Democratic incumbents lost, 2.4% of the 2,096 Democratic incumbents who ran.
  • 255 Republican incumbents lost, 9.9% of the 2,581 Republican incumbents who ran.
  • 12 minor party or independent incumbents lost, 50.0% of the 24 minor party or independent incumbents who ran.
  • The total number of incumbents defeated in general elections—318—was a 34% increase from 2016 (237).

    Incumbents defeated in primaries

    In state legislative primaries, 166 incumbents lost to challengers, 3.4% of incumbents running for re-election. This was more than in 2016 (125) and 2014 (131) but less than in 2012 (197).

    In 2018 primaries:

  • 78 Democratic incumbents lost, 3.6% of the 2,174 Democratic incumbents who ran.
  • 88 Republican incumbents lost, 3.3% of the 2,671 Republican incumbents who ran.
  • The total number of incumbents defeated in primaries—166—was a 33% increase from 2016 (125).
