I was born and raised in Kankakee School District 111 and graduated from the public school system. My personal experience as a student and as a sister of a person with a disability has ignited my passion for education and the impact of systems on the quality of education. After obtaining my bachelor's and master's degrees in Social Work, I began my career as a school social worker and eventually entered into administration. Now, after 31 years in education, I am retiring as the superintendent of Kankakee Schools.

Throughout my career, my focus has been on supporting students and families to increase their opportunities for academic and social growth. I believe that every child's path to success is unique. Thus, the educational system should be flexible enough to create equitable opportunities for all children. In addition, I also believe that supporting families is crucial to strengthen the educational experience.

As I enter retirement, I have developed strong leadership and problem-solving skills. I believe that I can serve Illinois children and families by developing and implementing policies and legislation that align with the vision of creating a robust economy by providing quality education and opportunities to all citizens of Illinois.

I am deeply committed to promoting education and ensuring access to quality schooling for all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status. I strongly believe in empowering women and promoting reproductive health, so that every person can make informed decisions about their own body and family. I am also passionate about creating affordable housing options so that everyone has a safe and stable place to call home. Additionally, I support workforce development initiatives that provide individuals with the skills and resources they need to succeed in today's rapidly changing job market. Finally, I am dedicated to promoting public safety and fostering strong, thriving communities where everyone can feel secure and supported.

I believe that all of these policies are interconnected. If we work on them in isolation, the economy will still suffer. For example, children who are affected by housing insecurity may not perform as well as other children. In addition, children who are affected by gun violence in our community may struggle with focusing on the educational process. In order to grow the economy, we also need to develop the workforce through an educational system that prepares children for a successful transition into adulthood.
Elected officials should possess the ability to comprehend various perspectives, solve problems, communicate policy intent effectively, and understand the practical implications of their decisions.
I have strong leadership and problem-solving skills and the ability to understand multiple perspectives.
The State Representative's core responsibilities include listening to the citizens they serve, incorporating various perspectives, and creating policies that improve people's lives.
I want to create legislation that improves the lives of our most vulnerable citizens. I believe that "a rising tide lifts all ships."
I remember the death of Harold Washington. I was a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He died on my 19th birthday.
My first job was working at Burger King as a college student. It was a summer job.
Lord of the Flies is my favorite book because it demonstrates how vulnerable society is when faced with isolation and lack of structure.
I would want to be a fairy godmother that could grant children wishes.
I often find myself in a dilemma where I have to choose between helping others and fulfilling my own needs. While I am passionate about helping people, it sometimes comes at the expense of my personal time and financial resources. It can be challenging to strike a balance between being there for others and taking care of myself. However, I believe that the satisfaction of being of service to others makes the sacrifices worth it.
In my opinion, a healthy and ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature is built upon the foundation of mutual respect and understanding. Both parties should be willing to listen to each other's perspectives and engage in healthy debates and discussions. This not only helps in building a strong bond between them but also allows them to learn from each other's experiences and grow together. It is important to maintain a level of openness, honesty, and transparency in such relationships, as this helps in establishing trust and credibility.
The challenge of public education has grown significantly in recent years. The original design of public education was created with certain variables in mind, but those variables have changed drastically. Today, our students are more diverse, and we are facing a shortage of teachers. Additionally, family structures have become more diverse, and the workforce's needs have changed significantly. These changes create a complex environment that requires careful consideration and planning. It also requires that policy and practice change to meet the needs of the educational system as well as the future workforce.
I believe that having a diverse group of legislators, both experienced and those with limited political experience, would provide stability and a range of perspectives.
I believe it is important to establish good relationships with other legislators in order to create effective policies for the people of Illinois. By getting to know one another, legislators can cultivate trust and mutual respect, making it easier to resolve conflicts and disagreements in a constructive manner while maintaining a positive working relationship. The uncompromising extremes of both sides of politics are unhealthy for Illinoisans.
I have multiple stories from children and families affected by gun violence. Two of the most touching stories are from two of my current students. The first student lost her brother to gun violence when she was entering 4th grade; her brother was entering high school. He was killed by an older student while playing basketball with friends. Following her and the impact of his death has truly helped me understand the long-term hidden effects of gun violence.

The second student lost his mother to gun violence at the hands of a brother with untreated mental health issues. These two students are among the many students whose lives will never be the same because of gun violence.
I love to laugh and have fun. no specific joke comes to mind.
I believe that it is necessary to compromise when creating policy. To develop a robust policy, it is important to consider and comprehend diverse perspectives and their effects on different individuals. Once you have comprehended the purpose and potential impact of the policy, it is in the broader community's best interest to make concessions to ensure that it has the greatest possible impact on the maximum number of people.
I want to look at a bill to increase the number of licensed teachers in the workforce. I also would like to look at laws and consequences for traffic violations that lead to men and women facing economic hardships because of transportation issues, fines, and potential jail time.
