David Schuman was a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals. He served on this court from 2001 until 2014. He was retained by voters in May of 2008[1]and remained on the bench until January of 2014. He was succeeded by Chris Garrett, who took the bench on February 1, 2014.[2][3]

Schuman passed away on October 8, 2019.[4]

Education

Schuman received a B.A. from Stanford University in 1966, an M.A. from San Francisco State University in 1968, a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Chicago in 1974, and a J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1984. Before beginning his legal career, he worked as an English professor from 1968 to 1981.[5]

Career

Judge Schuman began his legal career in 1984 as a clerk for former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Hans Linde. He then worked from 1985 to 1987 as an Assistant Attorney General in the Appellate Division of the Oregon Department of Justice. After this, he became a law professor at the University of Oregon School of Law. He worked in this position for over 10 years (1987-1997, 2001) and also served as an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs (1994-1996). In 1997, he returned to the Oregon Department of Justice and worked as a Deputy Attorney General until 2001. He then joined the Court of Appeals.[5]
