Noteworthy events
Paul Manafort case dismissed (2019)
On December 18, 2019, a federal judge dismissed a case against Paul Manafort on double jeopardy grounds. Manafort's attorneys filed for the case to be dismissed on September 5, arguing that Manafort was already tried for the crimes as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s case in federal court.[4] Vance charged Manafort with mortgage fraud and a dozen other state felonies, a move Vance said would require Manafort to serve time in prison even if pardoned of federal charges by President Donald Trump.[5] Manafort pleaded not guilty to the charges in court.[6]
Vance's office filed an official response to the dismissal request arguing that double jeopardy did not apply in the case. On October 9, 2019, they wrote that the case was "exactly the type of prosecution that New York’s double jeopardy statute explicitly permits: a successive prosecution where the harms caused to New York were not redressed by the prior prosecution."[7]
