Amy Simpson was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 41 of the Wyoming House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Simpson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • Education is the foundation for Wyoming’s future. The legislature has made it a priority in recent years and we have made great strides in preparing our kids to fulfill their potential and compete in the workforce.
  • But the recent funding cuts are making us to lose ground and important programs are eliminated and teachers are beginning to lose their jobs. Education has to remain a to priority even in times of austerity. We need a path that leads us back to the Wyoming Constitution which mandates that public education should be fully funded.

Affordable Healthcare

  • I strongly believe that all citizens should be afforded the opportunity to access affordable healthcare, especially preventative healthcare.
  • Under the most recent study done by the majority of citizens in Wyoming want the legislature to expand Medicare.
  • With huge cuts to education and to basic social services, there’s just too much at stake to throw away tens of millions of dollars just to play politics. The state of Wyoming accepts millions of dollars of federal funds for many different and viable purposes every year without question. There can be no more hollow excuses. This needs to get done.

Public lands

  • Our public lands make Wyoming the wonderful place it is. It is important that we remain faithful to the multiple-use philosophy that has helped ensure our citizens have access to their lands as a place to enjoy outdoor recreation, to hunt and fish and enjoy our world-class wildlife and to also develop for our current and future prosperity.
  • The push for state ownership of public lands is unrealistic, has little chance of succeeding in Congress and presents many daunting challenges in terms of adequate state funding to manage them appropriately. We need to continue to work with our federal partners and push for access and for multiple uses that reflect Wyoming values.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

  • Although these kinds of laws have been strengthened in recent years, we must remain vigilant about protecting our most vulnerable citizens from sexual predators and perpetrators of violence. I support strengthened laws where they can demonstrate they are effective in helping solve these difficult issues.
  • In terms of domestic violence, we must also understand that the larger social and economic issues at play can worsen it. Ensuring our citizens have good paying jobs and stable home lives can contribute to the solution. Ensuring that we have laws that enforce abusers and protect the victims.[1]
