Silver Maple Embroidery

It’s a hectic time of year, and my studio time is fractured.  I like having a hand embroidery project available so that when I have a few spare minutes I can busy my hands, clear my head, and feel like I've accomplished something non-seasonal.  This silver maple heliographic print is serving that purpose right now.  I printed it on a hemp/silk blend fabric that has a slight texture and a crisp feel to it.  It’s wonderful to work on.  I'm using three strands of DMC cotton embroidery thread.
  And since I’m old-school when it comes to embroidery, the back is (almost) as neat as the front.  There are no knots in the thread and all the ends are woven into the work. This will eventually get layered and quilted, and then no one will ever see the back again, but it brings me pleasure to work this way.

My work for “The 100” Fundraiser, in progress

Early this year I was honored to film for Quilting Arts TV series 1400, with Susan Brubaker Knapp as the host.  For one my segments, I demonstrated my method of combining needlefelting with other techniques to create a river landscape.  I’ve used this method on several of my latest works in The River series, including If I Woke at Dawn:
and In Dreams I Climbed the Cliffs:

I prepared a lot of “step-outs” for the shoot, showing the progression of steps needed to achieve the result.  Most of these I was able to recycle back into my stash or works in progress, but the final example, shown above, deserved a higher purpose. 

I will be adding more stitching, texture, and embellishment, and donating it to one lucky (randomly selected) bidder in Virginia Spiegel’s excellent fundraiser for the ACS, The 100.  Details on how it all works, and the list of the other 99 amazing contributing artists, can be found here.

Work in Progress – Ice Jam, Update 3

Work has progressed on the center panel of this piece.  I layered it with batting and lined the back, then began on the quilting.  I always get excited about the texture and detail that develops with all the stitching.  Fabric is such a responsive medium.  Look at how this has been transformed since the last update:
I enjoyed combining a lot of techniques in this piece—needlefelting, patchwork, surface design, quilting, couching and embellishment. .  When I teach about techniques, I always emphasize that “technique should be the servant of intent”.  This work is a good example of how the various ways of manipulating fibers and fabrics are not there just to showcase the methods, but to convey mood and meaning.

The 100 – a Fiberart For a Cause Fundraiser

 

I am honored to be an invited artist for "The 100" to be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. The goal for this fiberart fundraiser for the American Cancer Society is to raise $10,000 in one day.

I wrote recently about my esteem for Virginia Spiegel, and how she is one of the few people for whom I will give an immediate and enthusiastic “Yes!” when asked to participate in an event.  I have proudly contributed to past fundraisers Virginia has held, and Fiberart For A Cause has already raised $240,000 through the generosity of fiber artists and patrons. With this event, we will bring the dollar amount up to cool quarter of a million dollars.

The setup is simple and brilliant.  100 artists are contributing work—and it’s an amazing line up!  The first 100 patrons to sign up and donate $100 when the event opens on February 4 will receive a randomly selected artwork. Knowing many of the artists, and knowing the generosity of fiber artists in general, it’s entirely possible that many of the artworks will exceed the $100 valuation.  I know the one I’m working on will—I’ll share some pictures soon.

Work in Progress – Ice Jam, Update 2

The center portion of this piece, the needlefelted river, changed a lot since the start as shown in my previous post.  I continued building up the water with layers of wool roving, wool scraps, and silk slivers.  I scrunched up pale silk and needlefelted it into place to represent the ice on the river banks.  I added the banks with more scrunched silks in earth tones.

Around the felted portion, I built the piece up further with more strips of silk and wool.  Even this early on, the textures I was achieving were very exciting to me.  (The pictures enlarge when you click on them so you can see more detail.)

As I worked on the center piece, I started arranging and rearranging the collagraph prints and some pieced strips on the design wall.  I left them up for a while and contemplated them daily in case I needed to make adjustments before starting the actual piecing.

Blog Tour – Natalya Aikens

Today’s blog tour participant is Natalya Aikens, of Art by Natalya.


Natalya is a artist and photographer that works with textiles and stitching.  Lately she has incorporated recycled elements into her work, specifically plastic bags and dryer sheets.  In Natalya’s hands these humble materials are transformed into beautiful architectural depictions.  Her eye for line and design is unerring. I’ve known Natalya online for some time, and finally met her in person at a SAQA conference a few years ago. Blog Tour – Cynthia St. Charles

Today’s blog tour participant is Cynthia St. Charles of Living and Dyeing Under the Big Sky. 

Cynthia works with block printing and other surface design techniques to produce beautiful art quilts and mixed media works.  She’s made a Quilting Arts Workshop video on designing with hand carved printing blocks—see here—has had her work published, and exhibits widely.  Her blog also features incredibly stunning photos of her travels and adventures under the big western sky, and is a pure joy to read.

Blog Tour – Virginia Spiegel

Today’s blog tour participant is Virginia A. Spiegel.  Virginia is a prolific artist and author.  Her trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area provide the inspiration for beautiful and thoughtful artwork that incorporates painted, collaged and stitched fabric and paper. She exhibits her work widely, and has placed it in many private and permanent collections.

I met Virginia online years ago, in the listserve days, when I was first involved in the then-novel production of mail art fabric postcards.  Virginia took that concept and ran with it, establishing Fiberart for a Cause, which to date has raised more than $240,000 for the ACS. I've been a proud participant of many of her fundraisers, and Virginia remains one of the few people for who I will drop everything and help with whatever she is proposing.  She is a meticulous organizer and has the ability to make everyone involved in her projects feel valued and part of the larger good.  So I am particularly pleased that she agreed to help with my blog tour, and excited to click over and see her review of my Quilting Arts Workshop Video Surface Design Essentials for the Printed Quilt.

Blog Tour – Allie Aller

Blog Tour – Susan Brubaker Knapp

Today’s blog tour artist is Susan Brubaker Knapp of Blue Moon River.
 
I first met Susan online in an art quilt group many years ago.  There was a discussion about flowers, specifically cleomes, and I commented on the beauty of the ones she was growing.  And just like that, Susan sent me some seeds for my own garden.

Susan has since gone on to well deserved fame as an artist, a quilter, a teacher extraordinaire, and the new host of Quilting Arts TV.  But along with her obvious talent, it is her generosity of spirit, as evidenced by a simple gift of seeds, that sets her apart.

Blog Tour for Surface Design Essentials for the Printed Quilt

Hello!  I’m so happy you are joining me today.  I am kicking off a blog tour in support of my recently released Quilting Arts Workshop Video, Surface Design Essentials for the Printed Quilt. 

In the video, I distill my years of experience with four favorite surface design techniques—cyanotype, heliography, collagraphy, and thermofax printing—using clear and concise demonstrations.  There are examples of how I use prints in my work, as well as chapters on the basics of quilt design.  Whether you are new to surface design, or want to add to your existing design toolbox, there’s something here for everyone.

To help spread the word about the video’s release, I asked some of the artists and bloggers I admire most to participate in my blog tour.  To keep things interesting, both for all of us and for our readers, I didn't ask them for anything specific.  Each one is a seasoned professional, with a strong body of work and a distinctive voice and online presence.  So I simply asked them to view and review the video as they saw fit. Silk Mill #2 acceptance in Materials: Hard and Soft

I am very pleased to announce that my Silk Mill #2 has been accepted into Materials:Hard & Soft.

From the website: This annual competition and exhibition of contemporary crafts was started in 1987 and is now in it’s 28th year. Recognized nationally,Materials: Hard & Soft attracts hundreds of entries from every state in the union. Nationally recognized jurors select the show from slides and then award $5000 in prize money. The juror has always selected the winning pieces on-site. A catalog is printed. This year’s juror is Ana M. Lopez.
I am always particularly happy when my work is accepted for a fine craft exhibit, as I feel it is a good fit for the work that I do.  The exhibit runs from February 6 through April 2, 2015, at the Greater Denton Arts Council in Denton, TX. 
This work is based on a photograph I took of the dilapidated Ashley and Bailey Silk Mill, in Columbia, PA, just before a renovation project transformed a portion of it into the Turkey Hill Experience.  I was rather overwhelmed with the beauty of the architecture, and the way the light poured through the broken windows.  I made three quilts, to date, based on my photos.  Silk Mill #1 is currently touring with the Tactile Architecture Exhibit of the International Quilt Festival.  Silk Mill #3 was purchased by the State Museum of Pennsylvania and is now part of their permanent fine art collection.  You can track them all back as works in progress, and see my photos of the silk mill, by clicking on the Silk Mill tab in the header, or by clicking here.

Ice Jam – New Work in Progress

Last winter was an extraordinary one.  There was a long hard freeze, punctuated by partial warming, that transformed the Susquehanna River in bizarre and magical ways.  Thick chunks of ice piled up on the river and the shores in surreal formations. 

I took a lot of pictures and shared them previously here and here.

I have been very driven to work in my series on The River lately.  The Susquehanna has been a constant in my life experience, and I feel it is sometimes underappreciated in the world at large.  I wanted to document this amazing ice jam experience.
I started with the same collagraphy plates I used for If I Woke at Dawn, and made positive and negative prints with textile paints on cotton sateen.

This is good place to mention that there’s a chapter on collagraphy  in my recently released Quilting Arts Workshop Video, Surface Design Essentials for the Printed Quilt.
  As I was working on making and selecting the prints, I also started on a needlefelted centerpiece.  The background is brown wool/rayon felt, and I built up the river texture with wool roving and slivers of wool and silk fabric.  Above is the first mockup on the design wall.  There’s a lot more to go, to reach the icy texture and feeling I am aiming for.

I so admire and trust these professional artists that I kept my request to them very simple.  I didn't ask for a particular type of review, or for them to make a project according to specifications.  I just asked them to write about whatever aspects of Surface Design Essentials for the Printed Quilt appealed to them, in their own style and with their own unique perspective.

Making leaf prints, and other good news.

The printmaking season is winding down here. I enjoy the immediacy of working with natural materials, and I took advantage of this mild autumn to make a few more leaf prints while I could.

I got all excited about catalpa trees in 2008, and made some wonderful cyanotype and heliographic prints. Then I got sidetracked by something more urgent, or some kind of deadline, and set them aside. 

I was walking a woodsy trail recently and a catalpa leaf literally fell from a tree and onto me, so I took it as a sign and gathered a few more.  They are satisfyingly big leaves.
  I used my large Gelli plate and made both direct and “ghost” prints.  I got a bit exuberant with the colors.  They are up on the design wall, taunting me to ignore all the other projects in the queue, so we shall see. 

While I was at it, I made some sycamore leaf prints.   They are also a substantial leaf.  I have the beginnings of an idea on how I will use them—I have some new animal skulls that I want to work with, to add to my Flora and Fauna series.

My DVD, Surface Design Essentials for the Printed Quilt, is available for a limited time as a printmaking kit.  You receive the DVD, a copy of Quilting Arts Magazine with my how-to article on cyanotype printing, and a pack of treated cotton cyanotype fabric, so you can jump right in and start creating.  Get it while you can at the Interweave Store!  The DVD also has complete and concise instructions on heliographic printing, themofax printing, and collagraphy, so it is a very good deal.  The kit would make a lovely birthday or holiday gift.

And last but not least, I’ve received word that my work will be included in Sandra Sider’s compilation book, 1000 Quilt Inspirations, to be released in February 2015.  I’ve seen lots of other acceptance notices from artists I admire, so I know it’s going to be an excellent volume.  It’s available on preorder from the publisher and from Amazon.
