King Nicholas is the main antagonist of the 2020 Frozen tie-in prequel novel, Dangerous Secrets: The Story of Iduna and Agnarr.

He is the king of the militant neighboring land, Vassar, who comes to Arendelle a few years after the great battle in the Enchanted Forest and utilizes the citizen's fear of the Northuldrans (cultivated by the late King Runeard) to his advantage, by orchestrating fake "Northuldran" attacks on the kingdom, stirring the population to desperately seek an alliance with Vassar for military support.

History[]

After King Runeard had brought the better part of the Arendellian military into the Enchanted Forest, subjected them to a bloody battle and inadvertently caused them to be trapped by a cursed Mist for decades to come, his surviving son and successor crown prince Agnarr was left with a wholly undefended kingdom. While initially trying to disregard the unease of the people he was supposed to govern so that he could have more time with his best friend (the secretly Northuldran) Iduna, his advisor Lord Peterssen eventually shared with him some unsettling news. Apparently, characters in sun masks had begun terrorizing the kingdom, attacking their people and dying their livestock pink. Everyone in the land naturally blamed magic and the Northuldrans, as their previous king Runeard had done so often in his life. Iduna struggled to restrain herself, knowing her people did not wear sun masks but not wanting to risk being found out as one.

Lord Peterssen got in touch with King Nicholas, who, while from a less developed kingdom than Arendelle, boasted a sizable military which he offered up if his daughter Princess Runa could have Agnarr's hand in marriage. The rational Lord Peterssen agreed to this, though this strained the budding romance between Agnarr and Iduna. When King Nicholas arrived a great ball was immediately held, during which King Nicholas incessantly discussed the growing conflict with the "Northuldrans" and the need for a boosted military with Lord Peterssen, who professionally humored him. During this ball, Agnarr and Iduna had a very flagrant fight of passion. While King Nicholas failed to connect the dots, Princess Runa went to privately converse with Agnarr and actually turned out to be understanding of his relationship with Iduna, not wanting to spoil a pure romance. During the ball, King Nicholas had set off a bomb in the middle of the hall which conveyed to the nobility that things were getting quite tight, though fortunately no one was hurt.

Every house in the land started being searched for any secret Northuldrans. In agreement with Lord Peterssen, King Nicholas stationed his own men all over the kingdom, transforming it into a makeshift fortress (or a prison). As an especially pragmatic measure, King Nicholas cancelled the annual ringing of the Yule bell, which was a cherished Arendellian tradition. In the court, King Nicholas continuously fixated on fearmongering as much as possible, though the more sensible Agnarr questioned how no one had actually seen a Northuldran commit any of the crimes that were blighting the people up-close. King Nicholas kept insisting that it was all the doing of the Northuldrans, but then Iduna emerged with proof that King Nicholas was the true culprit, in the form of sun masks that could be found in one of the Vassar military camps that had been erected outside the perimeter of the castle as well as explosives that had been used in the great hall.

King Nicholas desperately tried to deflect the blame by accusing Iduna of being a Northuldran (which, ironically, he was right about), but his chances of turning the situation around deflated when his own daughter Runa spoke out against him. She was tired of all the lies and only wished the best for Agnarr and Iduna, so she revealed King Nicholas' scheme to the whole court. Seeing red, the king seemingly attempted to strike his daughter for being a traitor before he was seized by Arendellian guards. As he was being dragged away by the guards King Nicholas delusionally sputtered that Arendelle needed him to survive.

He was not seen again, but it's implied that Princess Runa would immediately succeed him.

Trivia[]

King Nicholas is the only Frozen villain to hail from a new kingdom since the ones that were introduced in the original film.
King Nicholas is similar to Prince Hans from the original Frozen in that he used the public's fear of magic and manipulated it to his own advantage, except that where Hans pretended, he only had one way to end eternal winter which was a genuine threat to Arendelle, King Nicholas plucked his entire narrative from thin air before stepping in as the "hero".
King Nicholas is the only Frozen character to ever use "thee" when addressing someone.
