I know you're to be a father and I couldn't get between a father and his child. [...] That's why I'm doing all of this in the first place. I'm trying to find my daughter.
―Wish Hook to Killian Jones[src]

Killian Jones, better known as Captain Hook and Detective Rogers following the Dark Curse, is a character featured in the ABC fantasy drama-series Once Upon a Time.

Hook originates from the Wish Realm, a land brought to life by a genie's wish. After completing a quest to capture a magical flower, Hook has a dalliance with a young princess, trapped within a tower. The following morning, he learns that the young princess is in actuality, Gothel, an ancient witch, who used the flowers enchanted properties to accelerate her pregnancy, giving her a means to escape, whilst leaving the babe in her palce. Hook chooses to be present as a father for his daughter, whilst attempting to find a means to her escape.

Following the Dark Curse, he is given the identity of Rogers, a police detective, partnered with Weaver, the counterpart to Rumplestiltskin. He investigates the case of Eloise Gardener, a woman who went missing years ago, and his investigation eventually leads him into a cult.

Background[]

Killian Jones was born to a woman named Alice who used to sing a lullaby to him, as he was growing up, and his father was not in the picture. His mother died at some point in Hook's life, years before he became a pirate. Hook seemed to have had a good relationship as he named his unexpected daughter, after her.

History[]

After the Third Curse[]

Hook and Teen Alice

Hook and Teen Alice

After Emma Swan's wish of not wanting to be the Savior is granted, an alternative realm is created in which the residents of the Enchanted Forest live in a world where the Dark Curse was never cast and the Evil Queen was defeated. In the Wish Realm, Hook's life is basically the same up until Regina's defeat, as Hook aged and did not need to ally himself with Regina's mother, Cora Mills. Hook finds a tower with Mr. Smee where he finds "Rapunzel" and they spend the night together. However, Hook realises he has been tricked and got her pregnant, only for Gothel to reveal herself and she sped up her own pregnancy as she plans to abandon the baby here so she can escape. Upon Gothel's exit, Hook returns to Smee and gives him the Jolly Roger, promoting his first mate to Captain, as Killian has now found an even better treasure, his daughter, whom he names Alice. Over the years, the two have a very close bond as he visits her every year and he decides to see Rumplestiltskin for help on how to free her. However, Hook breaks his promise and does not return straight away as he battles Captain Abhab, before returning to Alice. Gothel then appears and poisons Hook's heart, meaning that he will die if he and Alice ever approach each other.

Hook tries to save Emma.

As the years go by, now old, Hook travels the realms for true love in hopes of healing himself to reunite with his daughter, and finds Emma Swan and Pinochio, who he thinks is endangering her. Having regained her memories, Emma tells Hook that she doesn't need saving and August is shocked to learn that Emma knows Captain Hook. She reveals that she is in a relationship with another version of him before knocking him out and sending him back to his ship. Upon returning to Storybrooke, Emma reunites with her Killian and tells him that he needs to stick with water from now on, after he asks what happened to him in the new realm.

After the Fourth Curse[]

Years later, he goes to the Magical Forest and meets another version of himself and reveals that they had the same history accept for the fact that the Evil Queen was never able to cast her curse because Snow White and Prince Charming stopped her. He reveals to his younger self that he tried to find a version of Emma Swan for himself to fall in love with, after learning it was possible as Killian had done that. Hook tries to attack his alternate self before being stopped, who insults him for being a drunken. However, Hook reveals he has not drank in years and is a lot stronger than anticipated. Hook knocks his younger self before covering him up and leaving.

Hook goes to Lady Tremaine and makes a deal with her to turn him young in exchange for him to make sure Henry Mills - Storybrooke Killian's son - returns home. Tremaine agrees and magically makes Hook younger. Now full of youth again, Hook returns to Henry and Regina to trick him into believing Cinderella does not like him romantically, breaking Henry's heart. Regina tells Hook to give Henry one of his pirate pep talks, but Hook freezes when Henry asks his "stepfather" how Emma is doing. Emma suddenly appears through a portal and reveals that she and Killian are expecting a baby together, which shocks wish-Hook. Feeling regret for what he has done, after knowing what it's like to be seperated from Alice, Hook returns to the port where Storybrooke Hook attacks him and calls him out. Hook reveals to his counterpart that he was going to replace him and be with Emma, but learnt she is pregnant and doesn't want to ruin another man's chance at being a father. Killian asks if Emma is okay upon learning she is here and Wish-Hook tells him she is.

Killian stays by his wish-counterpart's side to comfort him and Emma arrives, shocked to see two versions of her husband. Believing his wish-realm version deserves a second chance, Killian convinces Emma to save him and she is successful. Hook thanks Emma and the three of them return to the portal area so Emma and Killian can get home. Emma convinces Wish-Hook to join Henry on his adventure, who agrees, as Emma also mentions that she would feel better that some version of his father was looking out for Henry. Before leaving, Regina decides to stay with Henry and new Hook in this realm, and Emma and her Killian leave for Storybrooke.

Henry later introduces Hook and Regina to Cinderella, who Henry is in love with, and they decide to form an alliance against Lady Tremaine, along with Tiana. Upon meeting Ella and Tiana, Hook is mistaken for Henry's father, but he tells her he's not exactly Henry's father (as his father is in Storybrooke with Emma) and they decide to find a way to defeat Tremaine and Drizella.

Some time later, Hook helps Henry find the perfect ring to propose to Ella with but are unsuccessful so Hook decides to steal back the Jolly Roger from Black Beard as part of an adventure, which leads them into a wave pool. Hook is surprised that Henry knows how to steer a ship, to which he tells him that the other version of him taught him. Henry is then able to find a ring for Ella and proposes. Ella and Henry later marry and welcome a daughter named Lucy, but Drizella threatens them with a curse that will come in eight years time, before she is frozen into a statue by her mother, who tells her she can't let her daughter cast the curse, using blood magic to freeze Drizella. Shortly after this, Hook, Henry, Regina, and Ella accompany Tiana at her coronation which happens after she is forced to put the original one on hold after learning of Dr. Facilier's threats.

Hook and Rumplestitskin become friends.

Hook and Rumplestitskin become friends.

During the eight years, Zelena, Regina's sister, arrives in the realm after learning her daughter, Robin has gone missing from Storybrooke. Zelena sees Hook and is confused upon having just seen him working with Emma as a sheriff, only to remember there are now two Captain Hook's. Hook offers to help Zelena after learning that Gothel is involved with Robin's disappearance. Together, Hook and Zelena venture into the woods where they find a secret hidden witch coven. Zelena is able to save her daughter after realizing Robin is being used as a sacrifice for a spell, and the mother-daughter duo reconcile, leading to them both deciding to stay in the Magical Forest. During this time, Hook learns the Storybooke counterpart of Rumplestiltskin has arrived, so Hook decides to put aside his and Wish-Realm Rumple's differences and become friends after seeing that people really can change.

On Lucy's eighth birthday, the curse is coming as the Coven of the Eight arrives at the castle and Drizella is freed by Gothel, even though blood magic is supposed to be unbreakable. Regina is blackmailed into casting the curse after learning the coven and Drizella has poisoned Henry's heart and the only way to save him is to cast the curse. When Ella is worried she and Lucy will be separated in this new land, Hook gives Ella a special item that Rumple gave him, which allows two people to still have this special connection, even under the curse. Hook reveals he was going to use it for him and Alice, but decides to give it to Ella, for her and Lucy. The curse is then cast and sends everyone to the land without magic, in Seattle, Washington.

During the Fifth Curse[]

Hook's cursed counterpart, Rogers.

Hook's cursed counterpart, Rogers.

In Hyperion Heights, he is known as Rogers, a police officer turned detective, working with Detective Weaver. They are tasked by Victoria Belefry in researching about a newcomer named Henry Mills, who Rogers quickly befriends. Rogers becomes obsessed with an unsolvable case on Eloise Gardener, someone who disappeared at least a decade before, but never found. During this time, unknown to Rogers, Weaver wakes up from the curse and regains his memories as Rumplestiltskin. Rogers comes to Henry after reading his book and notices a woman in the book, who Henry says is just a character from his book, but does not know who she really is because of the curse. Rogers befriends Tily during this time and helps her deal with her hardships. The two become very close and he acts as a father figure to her. When Tily thinks she is crazy, Rogers is the only one who doesn't see her this way and they often play chess together. Tilly shoots Weaver and Rogers is by his side as he recovers. Rogers is able to locate Eloise Gardner trapped in Victoria Belfrey's basement and frees her, unaware of who she really is and the consiquences that come with her being set free. During this time, Roni awakens from the curse and regains her memories as Regina Mills, and works with her granddaughter Lucy in getting Henry to remember his true life without killing him because he is cursed. They get Rogers and Nick Branson to spend time with Henry in hopes it might help him remember, but it does not.

Weaver and Rogers learn of the "Candy Killer", someone who is killing residents of Seattle, and Weaver tries to explain to Rogers that fairytales are real and that the killer is after witches. Although skeptical, Rogers continues the case as Weaver tries to help his friend regain his memories as Captain Hook. Rogers is later able to awaken from the curse after it is broken by Henry who regains his memories and kisses his mother after she is knocked out and seemingly killed by Gothel. Rogers starts to believe that witches exist in the world and that Eloise is Tily's mother, who is using dark magic.

After the Fifth Curse[]

Hook after the curse is broken.

Hook after the curse is broken.

With the curse now broken, everyone regains their memories including Hook, who remembers that Alice is his daughter. However, because of the poisoned heart, they can't get too close to each other to speak via their phones in order to communicate. Hook, Regina and Mr. Gold/Weaver soon learn that Lucy and Cinderella are trapped by the wish realm Rumplestiltskin and Henry is desperate to save his wife and daughter. They all try and save the family, but are sent to seperate parts of Rumplestiltskin's Castle, where Rogers and Weaver find themselves outside of Rumple's old family home and Henry and Regina are somewhere inside the cattle. The two men become friends, with Weaver saying that Rogers is the first true friend he has ever really had. With Rogers' heart poisoned it slows him down and keeps getting worse. Alice and Robin return from Storybrooke to the wish realm to help the heroes come up with a way to save Jacinda and Lucy and defeat Wish Rumple once and for all, with Snow White and Prince Charming assisting then. The group learns that Wish Rumple has individual storybooks for every single fairytale character in existence, and plans to trap them inside their own book, to ensure his own happiness.

Alice and Rogers reunite, but she is nearly sucked into a portal to be trapped in her storybook. Rogers grabs his daughter despite what the curse can do to him. Alice is safe but Rogers' heart starts to give up and he starts to die in his daughter's arms. Weaver learns the only way he can reunite with Belle by destroying the darkest version of himself. He rips out his heart, which glows to signify his good nature and being the savior he was destined to be. Weaver gives it to Hook who is revived and healed, but at the cost of Weaver's life, who sacrificed his life to save all the realms by killing wish Rumple. Hook embraces Alice and thanks his friend for his sacrifice, just as Regina comes in. She mourns her friend and former teacher as well, telling him he deserves peace more than anyone.

After the Sixth Curse[]

After Regina casts one final curse, but this time of happiness and love, she is able to bring all the reals together to Storybrooke so every single fairytale character in existence can be happy and they can all be in one place. Hook and Alice later attend Regina's coronation at the Royal Castle, Snow and Charming's home, along with all the other characters. Regina learns she has been elected as the new ruler of the United Realms and is about to be crowned queen just as Emma, Killian (Hook's main realm version) and their daughter, Hope, arrive late. Snow White crowns Regina as the Good Queen, who gives one final speech about hope and second chances.

Trivia[]

  • Colin O'Donoghue played Wish Realm Hook in the seventh season, because Jennifer Morrison left the series after the sixth season and the writers didn't think it was fair to the audience to separate Emma and Hook. Wish Realm Hook is also different to his Enchanted Forest counterpart as it was believed that the Enchanted Forest character had changed too much to go back to his old ways as a villain. [1][2]
