Activity 3:

Are the particles of matter?

What is between them?
(Group Yellow Reporting)
Objectives:
After performing this activity,
you should be able to:

1.Infer from observations that particles of matter move:

And

2.Represent through a drawing/illustrations

What is between particles of matter.
Materials:
2 cups of tap water
1 piece 30 mL plastic syringe (without a needle)
1 piece, wide – mouthed transparent bottle (200 or
250mL)
1 piece, narrow mouthed transparent bottle (100mL
capacity)
1 plastic or glass dinner plate
½ cup rock (not iodized salt) or ½ cup sand
Food coloring (blue,green or red)
Procedure:
1. Pull the syringe of the saying until it reaches
The 30mL mark of the syringe
2. Press your thumb on the tip of the plunger
And use your after thumb to push the plunger once

Procedure*
Q1. Can you push the plunger all the way though the syringe
While your thumb presses on the tip of the plunger? Why or why not?
Answer:

No, you cannot push the plunger all the way

through the syringe while your thumb presses on
the tip of the plunge. Simply because air is trapped
inside the syringe, and by preventing the air to escape
while pressure is inserted on the plunger, the air will
create an opposite reaction to the plunger preventing
the movement. Although air is invisible, it contains
molecules that reacts against the plunger.
Q2. What do you feel as you push the plunger?

Answer:
When you push on the plunger you can feel the air
pushing back. When you stop pushing, the air inside
the syringe will return to its original size. There are
different ways to compress air. One way is to
squeeze a certain volume of air into a smaller space.
3.This time, push the plunger of the syringe all the way
To the end of the syringe
Suck water from the cup or container up to the 30mL
Level of the syringe.
Cover tightly the tip of the syringe with your thumb.

Q3. What do you feel as you push the plunger?

Answer:
When you push on the plunger you
can feel the air pushing back. When
you stop pushing, the air inside the
syringe will return to its original size.
There are different ways to compress
air. One way is to squeeze a certain
volume of air into a smaller space.
Q4.Compare what you felt when you pushed the plunger
With the air and with the water?

Answer:

The syringe with air inside can be

easily pushed, because air is
compressible and can be squeezed into
a smaller space. The syringe with
water inside is harder to push, because
water is not compressible and takes up
a fixed volume. So, the answer is: the
syringe with air inside can be easily
pushed.
Q5.Explain what you observed. You may represent your comparison
By drawing an illustration of the syringe and the particles of water.

Answer:
The reason behind what you observe is the distance of
the molecules between gas and liquids. Your first
observation that it is easy to pull the plunger of the
syringe that contains gas. This is due to the molecules
of the gas that is far away from each other. with a
large distance between molecules, gases manifest the
ability to be compressed. Thus giving you an easy way
to push the plunger.
On the other hand, the distance of the molecules of
water was not that far away from each other. Having
a distance that was not too far away from each other,
you experience that it was harder than the syringe
with air.

4.Pour ½ cup of tap water into one transparent glass bottles.
Q6.did water take the shape of the container?

Answer:

Water has no shape. In its liquid

form, it borrows the shape of the
container it occupies. Simple
experiments can help students
become more aware of the
properties of water as well as the
importance of water in their lives.
6.This time, pour the water just on the flat surface of a dinner
Plate.
Q7.what do you observe? Write all your observations

Answer:

The water didn't take

the shape of the plate
because it have a flat
surface
7.Examine a single piece of battle cap.put it inside the
Battle. Observe carefully the flow of water
Q8. what do you observe? Write all your observations

Answer:

The cap stays in its

definite shape coz it is
solid unless you put
liquid on a dinner plate
8. Pour ½ cup of rock salt or sand into the t narrow mouthed
Bottle. Observe carefully what happens to rock salt
As you pour it into the bottle and when all of it has been
Transfermed.
Q9. Did rock salt or sand take the shape of the
Bottle? Did the particles of rock salt change in
Shape?

Answer:

yes, the rock salt or sand takes

the shape of the bottle. No, the
particles of rock salt did not
change it's shape. Its remains its
shape but follows the shape of the
container.
That’s all! Thank you!
