INDEX

INTRODUCTION
The NGO is managed by a group of young people with the goal of assisting and uplifting the
poor and needy. Karuna assures every person that it will work across all sectors of society
and will raise the spirit of youth to meet the expanding nation's demands. It pledges to work
with children, who are the foundation of a successful life, women, who are the backbone of
every family, and the elderly, who are our guides at all times, to enhance education and
health. The foundation also works for the welfare of Animals that live around us in the
environment.

2. OBJECTIVES
To empower the underprivileged to earn his/her livelihood and increase one’s awareness on a range
of issues – from healthcare to appropriate social behavior to understanding one’s rights, and in the
process evolve as a better citizen through means of education.

To help the children in fulfilling the basic criteria of education and physical and mental welfare to
enhance their quality of life.
To Facilitate creativity and innovation in young minds about creating an environment which is
healthy, therefore, aiming for the holistic development of children.

To take care of Animals around us.

3. RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

Generate awareness about human values and practicing and cultivating a social caring attitude
towards the community while understanding the atrocities individuals have to endure on a daily
basis thereby, focusing on how to utilise and channel resources to provide help.
Enhancing the sense of individual responsibility towards society and acting upon the urge to help in
correct and ethical ways.
Understanding and recognising the basic requirements of people in need for help and consequently
providing for it While maintaining a positive attitude towards the community service.

4.AREA OF STUDY
I joined the NGO as a volunteer and participated in their programs initiated for education and health
of unprivileged children and other community services.

5. METHODOLOGY OF STUDY
The work consisted of outdoor activities which involved volunteering for providing elementary
lessons to underprivileged children, conducting co-curricular activities with children and feeding the
animals.

6.WORK DONE
• A webinar on “Increasing Mental Health Awareness” was conducted and it focused on stress
management and to fulfil the purpose of encouraging the youth to understand the
importance of physical & mental health in order to live enhanced life.
• The next activity I took part in was feeding the animals in my vicinity.
• I volunteered to teach underprivileged children team-building skills through an activity
which was done in groups. Educational kits comprising of- sketchbooks, Notebooks and
• colour pencils were also distributed.
• I took basic English and math lessons of children.
7.RESULT, OBSERVATION AND ANALYSIS

I observed that the children had learnt basic manners and were happy to learn and study more than
ever. They were keen on learning craft and art. The health awareness camp too instilled knowledge
in them. They knew about basic health concerns and diseases. They now know the preventions and
cures to fever, malaria, dengue etc.
These children value education now and all of them see themselves as someone successful. All of the
kids had a goal that they wish to achieve.
They were very happy to see me every time I went to them because they were willing to learn
something new. Every time they would ask, ‘Didi aaj kya karenge?’ They were all pumped up to
learn.

My experience with this outreach work was a different experience for me altogether. I have gone to
a lot of places, met a lot of different people but never felt so happy being around a bunch of children
who are not even from the same social class and are so different. Being around these children was
like a safe haven for me. I went to teach them a lot of things but they in return taught me a lot of
things like being selfless, valuing food and other stuff, being hardworking etc. I started thinking like
them on various aspects. The love and respect these children have is enormous.
Everything that I ever taught them or gave them was kept by them so safely.
I thought this community work to be the same compulsory boring social work that I had to do in
school. But this was altogether different. These kids looked up to me to learn
new stuff. They thought me to be angel for them who would bring fun to their boring life. This love
and respect made me care for these children a lot. I literally started thinking about doing a lot for
these kids. I would occasionally get them food and chocolates. Few of these children didn’t have
proper clothes to wear. I even gave few of them clothes.
These children also instilled a sense of responsibility and organisation in me. I knew I had to teach
these children whatever I could because these are the future of our nation. I would get up every
morning and think about numerous things I could teach them or do with them. I became responsible
for them and their learning. I had to arrange and organise for their art and craft material.
What touched me the most was that these children even turned up to learn on a day when it was
raining heavily. All drenched they sat eagerly and waited for their teachers to come and teach them.
Their willingness to learn made me value my learnings and education.
These children managed to make a special place in my heart and our relationship will not surely not
end with the end of my service hours. I will continue visiting them and teaching them.

8.CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS

The NGO continues to work towards the upliftment of the poor section of the society. So far they
have been proven successful in helping children with disabilities get the appropriate medical
treatment. I was able to contribute in my own way to their initiates for the underprivileged in the
best way possible and it gave me immense satisfaction doing so. Keeping in mind the impact caused
by the pandemic more effort needs to be done in creating strong online presence so that the
fundraising doesn’t face any decline. And more Emphasis is need on clearly defining the vision of the
organization.
I would recommend that had it been the that the gov school were functioning well, this would not
have been the situation of education of the underprivileged in India. So, while taking this initiative,
NGOs who work in this sector should also develop campaigns to purse the government to ensure
that education in gov schools are taking place properly, dropout rates are decreased and children
have something to lookup to while going to school like fun activities and good meals as well as
vocational work for older children and giving them time to pursue the same while being in school
and being able to earn as most children are pulled out as their family sends them to earn. For girls,
menstrual hygiene products should be available as many girls miss their education after they start
their period due to inadequate means of managing their cycles.
Also some incentives should be provided to these children so that their families keep them in school.
So, NGOs should work with gov schools to ensure the same.

9. LEARNING OUTCOMES

• I took in the human qualities and the most common way of really focusing on the
community.
• I found out with regards to our way of life of meeting up and helping individuals out of luck.
• I observed that it is equally important to give the care we give to humans to animals as well.
• I realised that a difference in your method of approaching those in help holds a lot of merit
in developing the correct empathetic understanding of their situation.

HUMAN VALUES AND

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
CASE STUDY
TOPIC: SIGNIFICANCE OF HUMAN VALUES IN
DAY-TO-DAY LIFE

WHAT ARE HUMAN VALUES?

Values are one of the most integral characteristic that a person imbibes in their life and which
serves as a supervisory principle for the person. The different values like honesty, integrity,
love and happiness are the values that is attained by a human being through practice.
Whereas, the other values like health, money, fame, status, intelligence, etc are some of the
values which helps a human being in attaining their path or end result materialistically.

In today’s world Human Values are very important for a person to survive in this
continuously evolving environment. They are the features that guide people to take into
account the human element when one interacts with the other human. They have many
optimistic characteristics which helps in creating bonds of humanity amongst the people and
helps them in connecting with one another.

Human Values are also the foundation of a practical life in the society, through which the
space to drive, or move towards one another, leading to peace is built. These values are
universal and shared by all the human beings despite their religion, nationality, culture,
history, etc.

The value system of a person developed and reinforced through the culture in which they are
born or through the experiences and environment that one lives in. Also, socialisation with
the parents, friends, society, experiences whether they are personal or social, etc contribute to
the formation of values in individuals. These human values are also a factor that gives you
the reasoning of your actions, and helps you in having a consistent life. While it helps you in
introspecting your actions and the causes of it, it also helps in understanding why the other
person does what they do and where they come from while doing any such act.

The function of these basic values enable every human to realize or maintain highest or
human value for establishing relations of peace and yet it remains indefinable. Its
understanding varies according to age (child, teen, adult), to one’s education and surrounding
culture. It is better assumed when combined with other values: a disposition that is deeper
than graciousness, very close to consideration, and approaching appreciation.

Several universal human values such as Truth, Righteous conduct, Peace, Love and Non-
violence are directly associated to physical, intellectual, emotional psyche and spiritual facets
of human personality. There is need and urgency to reinforce these values for a better and
humane society.

CASE STUDIES:

1. THE STRUGGLE OF KHUSHI…

Khushi migrated with her family from Bihar to Delhi when she was just a year old when
their shop in Bihar was robbed, rendering them penniless. In Delhi, with the aid of their
friend, they were able to rent a small room in the slum of Vikaspuri, where they are
currently residing. Unable to understand or discuss the personal issues at her house,
compounded by the abuses of her father, Khushi’s father decided to leave her with one of
her relatives as he couldn’t take the financial burden of her studies. Through Karuna She
has been able to continue her education.

2. AARTI; CHASING HER DREAMS.

“I came to New Delhi from Bihar. I remember huddling together in a train where a family
of six started living in a slum. After five years my father passed away and my mother who
was working as domestic help increased the number of households and worked harder. I
loved to play football with other children. I enrolled in school, came to take classes in
Karuna and learnt how to manage myself.
Today I am proud to say I am a football coach and a Bharatanatyam classical dancer. Both
my brother and I work at Angels Academy and manage our resources. In the past, I had
witnessed that anybody who shook hands with me would go and wash his, however the
tables have turned. People hug me in fact and give my example to others. I was ‘nobody’ in
the past but today I am the best version of myself which was only possible because of this
organization.

I would like to be a professional Football coach and a classical dancer. “Karuna is my

family”

3. SUCCESS STORY OF RAJU

My family is poor, so when my mother became sick my father had to work for extra money
for her operation in Delhi. I was left responsible to care for my mother and younger brother. I
slept outside the hospital for a month and a half to look after then when I was only ten years
old.
Street life is not easy. In fact every day is a struggle. I dropped out of school when we moved
from the village to Delhi. I wanted to keep studying but my father said I needed to work to
support my family. I was given a small basked which I sold fruits and vegetables from. I
would get abused by adults and the police, but I had no choice as I had to make money. Soon
after Maa got better, I decided to restart my studying.
I first met a Karuna Volunteer in 2016 who told me all about the organisation and how they
work. They further told me about the shelter homes and it was then that I decided to let go of
my home in order to continue my studies. With the help of Karuna, I passed my 12th with
good marks. This organisation has given me everything that I have today, and they have
supported me with my studies, not just financially but they also took care of my overall
growth in the organisation.

“I would have slipped into substance abuse as many of my peers used to encourage me to try
the substances stating that it would make me forget all the troubles I had in life. But I always
remembered what I wanted to do with my life, and these people have really helped in staying
on the right track.”
4. SUCCESS STORY OF SALMAN

I was 13 years old when I first heard of Karuna through one of my friends in the school. My
father sadly had an accident which stopped him from being able to work, leaving my mother
to try to care for the 8 of us. She started selling cow dung cakes to support the family. I even
had to make money and used to stitch shoes (I was given 2 rupees per pair that I made).
Everyone in the neighbourhood used to bully me for being so thing from lack of food. They
would never even call me by my birth name. I heard that name for the first time in so long
when I became involved in Karuna.

I was so shy and scared at first, it took them a month of counselling me and talking in order
to make me comfortable with the organisation, the kids and how this organisation would help
me in making my future better.

The Karuna helped me to catch up with my studies and made me understand from the very
basics. The Bhaiya Didi are very helpful. I wasn’t bullied at school or felt left out in the
shelter home for being too far behind. It also taught me life skills, and now I can proudly say
that I am amongst the TOP 7 children in my classroom. And this is all because of Karuna
