Kundu Introversion Extraversion Inventory (KIEI)

AIM:To obtain a reliable measure of introversion extroversion dimension of adult behavior.

INTRODUCTION:

The knowledge and understanding of personality not only makes the individual aware about his
own behavior but to a certain extent, makes him sensitive to the behavior of others.

Personality usually refers to what is unique about a person’s characteristics which distinguishes
him from others. Several factors within the individual and outside influence and shape
personality.

A number of theorists attempted to describe and define personality. According to Allport,

personality is a dynamic organization within the individual of psychophysical factors that
determine his characteristic behavior and thought.

The complex nature of personality has resulted in different ways of studying personality. Some
of the important approaches are:

1. Psychoanalytic approach

2. Trait approach

3. Type approach

4. Social learning approach

5. Humanistic and Existential approach

It was Jung who first introduced introversion-extroversion dimension into personality theory. An
extrovert personality means such traits as outgoing, friendly etc. Introvert personality refers to
traits such as shyness, timidity etc. Some people are ambiverts, which means that they show
characteristics of both introverts and extraverts.

KIEI is a self-report measure of personality developed by Ramanath Kundu. It is used to obtain a

reliable measure of adult behavior or to use it for diagnosis, selection and career guidance. It was
developed according to the Indian socio-cultural pattern. The inventory consists of 70 items with
uneven number of response choices, divided into 5 blocks.

The mode of response in each block is different and directions for indicating answers for
different blocks are given in the test booklet. To avoid ‘middle category bias’ from a pattern of
systematic presentation, the arrangement of the response choices from 1 to 5 or 1 to 4 or 1 to 3 is
not made according to increasing or decreasing degree of extraversion.

PROCEDURE:

The Subject is seated comfortably and the following instructions are given: “This is not a test,
there are no right or wrong answers to any of the questions. For each question in the booklet,
several possible answers are given. You are to read the questions carefully and then select your
answer. For each block, read the instructions given in the booklet carefully before you start.
From the response categories, choose the response which you think will suit you the best. Make
sure you mark the correct response on the response sheet as the categories are not given in the
progressive order”.

“There is no time limit but most people usually take less than 30 minutes to complete the
inventory.”

SCORING:

Scoring procedure is simple and is summarized in the following steps:

 Number the rows in each block progressively. (Write it outside the box)
 Count the number of tick marks in each row in each block and enter the figure under the
column T against the respective row. (Write the figure inside the box)
 For each block, multiply the number of the row and the total number of ticks in each row.
 Enter the product figure under the column S against the respective row.
 Find the total of S in each block to obtain the block score and add together all the block
scores to obtain total introversion-extraversion score.
 With the total introversion-extraversion score, find out the C scale point from Table 5 of
the manual.
