The human digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract plus the accessory
organs of digestion (the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder).[1] In this
system, the process of digestion has many stages, the first of which starts in the mouth. Digestion
involves the breakdown of food into smaller and smaller components, until they can be absorbed
and assimilated into the body.
The different organs of the digestive system includes:
Mouth- food that enters the mouth is lubricated and chewed until it forms to a bolus.
Pharynx- common passage ways for digestion and respiration.
Esophagus- is a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the
stomach.
Stomach- is the expanded organ located between the esophagus and the small intestine.
Small Intestine- is considered as the organ of complete digestion and absorption.
Large Intestine- temporary stores fecal materials, absorbs vitamins produced by certain
symbiotic bacteria in the colon, and reabsorbs water from the indigested residue
Rectum- found at the distal end of the sigmoid colon that serve as a warehouse for the
undigested residue or feces.
Anus- exit point of fecal materials
Accessory Organs for Digestion:
Salivary Glands
Liver and gall bladder- produce bile that emulsifies fats and neutralization of the chyme
Pancreas- secretes pancreatic juices that aids in the digestion of proteins
ACTIVITY:
A. In the space below, draw and label the parts of the digestive system.
1. What are the different parts of the digestive system and give its function?
2. What are the different processes that are involved in the digestion process?
