TEACHING PHILOSOPHY 1

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” -Benjamin Franklin

Goals for Student Learning

Goals for student learning are critical. Students will be encouraged to be involved in the

classroom in many different ways to make their learning experience as positive and productive as

possible. Goals that are made for student growth in different areas will be present in the

classroom. Teachers should take time to plan their lessons and activities throughout the day that

are going to help students reach goals. Perseverance needs to be present in the classroom so

teachers can hold students accountable to their goals. Goals should be targeted towards

academics and life skills.

Teaching Methodology

Teaching methods will be student centered, kinesthetic, teacher-driven, and group

oriented. The students need to direct their learning, but the teacher needs to be in charge.

Kinesthetic learning should be present in the classroom to allow students to learn hands on. The

classroom should be group-oriented. Children should work in groups so they can learn from each

other and work together. For example, group projects throughout the year will help students

establish social and teamwork skills.

Assessment of Goals

Monitoring student learning is essential. Teachers should have classes take tests to see

how well they are doing with the material. Tests should not occur often, just at the end of units to

see how well students are doing. Journals would be a valuable tool because it provides students

with a lot of opportunities to express themselves and lets teachers stay connected with students.

For example if a student is having a hard time at home they may write about it in their journal

giving the teacher insight to their home life. Teachers need to have communication with students

so they are able to monitor student learning. Check-ins should be present in classrooms to see

how students are learning the material.

Learning Environment

A positive learning environment is key to successful learning. The students need to feel

safe in their environment to learn to their full potential. Respect must be one of the biggest

elements in a classroom. There needs to be respect between the teacher and students, and

students with other students. Teachers must provide an engaging environment so the students are

wanting to learn. For example, some hands on activities would help create an engaging

environment. Students need to know that teachers care about them. If students know that a

teacher cares for them they will feel safe and they will be better overall student.
