1.The folowing passage is about different types of merchant ship.

Merchat ships can be classified according to what they carry. 2Most are designed to carry
cargo, but a few still carry passengers.

Cargo ships can be devided into two basic types. 4One type carries dry cargo, the other
cariies liquid carg. 5Multy-deck vessels are a traditional type of dry cargo. 6Their holds are divedid
horizontally by one or two tween decks. 7Dry bulk cargo is carried in bulk carriers.8These do not
have tween decks. 9Container ships are the most modern type of dry cargo carrier. 10They carry
container of standard dimensions. 11Fruit, meat and dairy produce are carried in refrigarated ships.

Oil tankersare the most common type of liquid cargo carrier. 13They are often very large. 14Two
other types of liquid bulk carrier of growing importance are liquefied natural gas ( lng) carriers
and chemical carriers.

In comparison with cargo vessels, passenger ships are fewer in number and type.

Passenger liners are the tradisional type of passenger ships. 17Nowadays their number has been
greatly roduced. 18Cruise ships are another type of passenger vessel. 19These are often converted
passenger liners. 20Ferries are the most common type of passenger vessel. 21many of them are also
designed to carry vechicles.
