Shovels and Spades

Your everyday shovel comes in a variety of shapes perfect for a number of different tasks. Based on the chore ahead, you may find there’s a specially designed shovel intended for that very use. Here are a few of the different varieties of shovels that might find their way into your garage or home workshop.

• Digging: When you picture a shovel, one of the digging variety probably comes to mind first. With their slightly curved scoops and upturned edges, these are perfect for sinking into loose or hard-packed soil.
• Scoop: A scoop shovel is used to move large amounts of material, such as mulch or sawdust. Another variety, the snow shovel, is the go-to tool for clearing off your driveway and sidewalk after a snowstorm.
• Post hole digger: These feature two shovels joined by a hinge. They can easily penetrate the soil and scoop out columns of dirt so fence posts can be set inside.
• Trenching: With a sharp, pointed tip and a scoop that’s rimmed with sides, this style is designed to clear out or form a trench.
• Drain spade: Drain spades are notable for their narrow scoops and rounded tips. They’re perfect for scooping out a hollow for a new flower or transplanting a small shrub or two.
