Without a properly functioning A/C unit, a hot summer day can be downright unbearable. Luckily, with proper maintenance and the use of air conditioner accessories, your air conditioning unit can happily keep chugging away all summer long.

Most importantly, any air conditioner filters should regularly be changed out each month. Air conditioning filters with a higher Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) will filter out more particles and provide cleaner air. Any air conditioning ducts that travel through a hot attic or tight crawl space should be insulated with foam, batt insulation or rigid-foam insulation to keep them cool.

Pre-emptive maintenance includes covering an outdoor unit with an air conditioner cover to protect it from pests and debris. You should also schedule a yearly cleaning before the weather starts heating up. A cleaning service should include:
• Inspection and cleaning of the coils
• Cleaning or replacement of the filters
• Lubrication of motors and bearings
• Checking and cleaning blowers and fans
• Adjusting or replacing fan belts
• Inspecting controls and safeties
• Checking refrigerant levels and pressures
• Checking operating temperatures
