Death of veteran actor, 81, who starred in The Bill is announced as inquest is held after he died following surgery

Actor Tony Mathews died after surgery in 2023, it has been confirmed.

The veteran actor was best known for roles in the likes of The Bill, Inspector Morse and Poirot. 

Tony, from Canterbury, Kent, also starred in Ridley Scott's 1977 war film The Duellists, his first screen role, and played Royston Andrews in The Governor.

It was confirmed today that an inquest into his death will be held in Kent following his death in December 2023.

The seasoned TV star first appeared in The Duellists in 1977, playing the role of Gen. Treillard's Aide-de-Camp.

He also played Lord Lucan in Escape and featured in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years as Anthony Eden.

He then appeared in two episodes of The Bill in the early nineties, playing Cosgrove and Farquharson. 

He followed this with a role as a pathologist in Inspector Morse in 1992. 

Other credits on his resume include One Foot in The Grave, Scandal, Dance With A Stranger, Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years, and Play For Today. 

His final role, in 1997, was as Sheridan in an episode of Pilgrims Rest after 58 acting credits across 20 years.
