Pretty much a steady grade without relief all the way to the lake, so some will want to take breaks along the way. The lake views were great.

Trailhead is at the parking lot just past the entrance to the Salt Creek Recreation Area. Free day use. I took the whole loop, and if you go to the cove, which you should, and the peak, my Garmin watch said 7.22 miles. Nice trail and views. Don't come here - I want it all to myself!

Because of the road washout, you have to use the bypass trail. In retrospect, the inclines on the bypass trail weren’t THAT bad, but there’s a pretty steep hill you’ve got to climb and descend before you’re back on the road after the washout spot. Aside from that, you’re treated to some abandoned park buildings on the other side of the washout, overlooks of the Elwah River, and, the payoff for your trek up the road, an overlook of Glines Canyon. Incredibly worth the moderate-length walk. I started early-ish and caught a lot of dramatic morning lighting.

We went on May 24,2025. It was too snowy. We were able to do some of it, but it’s still too early and we couldn’t easily navigate the trail. We got there at 8 am and parking was fine. By 10 am it was full and several others waiting.

Saw 5 bears, fall colors were beautiful. Very diverse ecosystems, one of my favorite trails I’ve done
