Light dusting of snow up to the lake, about 6 inches upon arrival. Put on the gators and spikes before heading up the ridge. Doable until about 3600 feet before switching to snowshoes. Super lucky as a critter broke trail for me almost all the way up the ridge. Stellar views all day.! Turned back at Klahhane as it seemed a little too sketchy to continue on. Fun day.!
The trail from the parking lot was mostly snow free until near Lake Angeles. After Lake Angeles, used snowshoes. Made it to near the high point of the hike at approximately 4.3 miles from the trailhead but turned around to avoid exposure on steep and icy slopes. Snow near the top of the ridge was several feet deep. Be aware of high winds and potential avalanche conditions.
Hit the trail at 9am and soon encountered numerous blowdowns since I last hiked this a few days ago. Two blowdowns were a bit challenging to navigate, and then the rain started coming down hard from the log bridge at about mile one most of the way to the top, there were torrents of water rushing down the trail in numerous areas , the footing decent but cautious was required, At the top the wind started blowing hard and I got worried about broken limbs, falling trees so I sped back down as safely as I could. Pretty wild hike at times but always something new and fun.
Hiked this on 11/12. It was a little snowy at the top but nothing too wild. Views at the top were great. Pretty easy hike besides the elevation. My spouse and I ate our lunch along the lake. People must be feeding the birds up there because they were hovering very close by while we ate. Trailhead is still accessible with hurricane ridge road being closed. Trailhead is right before the closure.
Parking lot is about 5 miles past the visitors center but just yards away from the main entrance on Hurricane ridge road. The trail is wonderful, no bushwhacking at all but did have to go over 3-4 fallen logs. Got up to the lake and then went up a little further on Klahhane ridge trail for an exceptional view. Overall great but challenging (this is coming from someone that hikes every 3-4 months) as some parts are a bit steep but feel endless. Highly recommend!
Amazing trail! If you’re really in shape and used to gain in elevation, this trail probably won’t be that bad. I would say I’m a little in shape and it wasn’t too bad, it’s just a constant climb and with a few breaks I was okay. I wore leggings and thin long sleeve shirt and I felt great on the way because I got hot. But the top is cold and your sweat cools, bring a jacket, beanie, and maybe gloves, especially if you’re going to take a break at the top (which you should because it wa gorgeous). Not very busy a few group of people. The trail was good just a little muddy. We hiked up in 1 hr 41 min, we stayed for like 30 min at the top and took a little over 3 hours overall. Beautiful hike and it’s at the bottom of the mountains so you don’t need an all terrain car I believe e
You need to get a permit from the visitors center (30$ for 7 days) about a 5mins drive before you hit the trailhead. It's a beautiful very well maintained trail. The drive in us paved the entire way and there's a nice parking lot at the trail head. There's actually some camp spots at the top too! It was pretty consistent and really enjoyable to hike. Lots of beautiful moss and mushrooms. We did this on a rainy foggy day and I think it was perfect in a way. We barely got to see a thing at the lake but really enjoyed the hike regardless. Took 3hrs round trip with about half an hour at the top to have lunch. I definitely don't call myself a fast hiker but didn't really feel the need for a break on the way up and we plowed our way down to warm back up
Started at 7AM, only people on trail and it took us a little under 4 hours. The steep uphill wasn’t TOO bad but definitely had to take a few breaks on the (few) level parts of the trail. Saw some deer and chipmunks and head was on a swivel since there was a sign about cougar activity-brought spray. Had a little back at the top and rested for about 40 minutes before the downhill stomp. If you know, you know.
