Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 2 servings

Sauce:

  • 3 cups water

  • 2 dried anchovies, or more to taste

  • 3 tablespoons chile paste

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup

  • 2 Korean fish cakes, sliced

  • 1/2 onion, thickly sliced

  • 1 spring onion, thickly sliced

Directions

  1. Combine water and anchovies in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook for 10 minutes. Remove and discard anchovies. Set anchovy water aside.

  2. Combine chile paste, sugar, soy sauce, and corn syrup in a bowl. Set chle paste mixture aside.

  3. Add rice cakes, onion, and chile paste mixture to anchovy water. Bring to a boil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add spring onion and boil 3 minutes more.

Cook's Notes:

This is quite spicy, so adjust the quantity of chile sauce for less heat.

If you use frozen rice cakes, defrost them in the microwave for 30 seconds. Don't boil the rice cakes too long, or they'll get mushy. The texture should be chewy.
