Leonard Bernstein (/ˈbɜːrnstaɪn/; August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the US to receive worldwide acclaim. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history."
His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world's leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan,Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, On The Waterfront, his Mass, and a range of other compositions, including three symphonies and many shorter chamber and solo works.
Bernstein was the first conductor to give numerous television lectures on classical music, starting in 1954 and continuing until his death. He was a skilled pianist, often conducting piano concertos from the keyboard.
Symphonic Dances may refer to:
The four Symphonic Dances of the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, form the collection notated as Op. 64. They were written c. 1896 and published in 1897. They draw their inspiration from the earlier folk works collected by Ludvig Mathias Lindeman.
The Symphonic Dances, Op. 45, is an orchestral suite in three movements. Completed in 1940, it is Sergei Rachmaninoff's last composition. The work summarizes Rachmaninoff's compositional output.
The work is fully representative of the composer's later style with its curious, shifting harmonies, the almost Prokofiev-like grotesquerie of the outer movements and the focus on individual instrumental tone colors throughout (highlighted by his use of an alto saxophone in the opening dance). The opening three-note motif, introduced quietly but soon reinforced by heavily staccato chords and responsible for much of the movement's rhythmic vitality, is reminiscent of the Queen of Shemakha's theme in Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel, the only music by another composer that he had taken out of Russia with him in 1917.
The Dances allowed him to indulge in a nostalgia for the Russia he had known, much as he had done in the Third Symphony, as well as to effectively sum up his lifelong fascination with ecclesiastical chants. In the first dance, he quotes the opening theme of his First Symphony, itself derived from motifs characteristic of Russian church music. In the finale he quotes both the Dies Irae and the chant "Blessed be the Lord" (Blagosloven yesi, Gospodi) from his All-Night Vigil.
Side (Greek: Σίδη) is an ancient Greek city on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, a resort town and one of the best-known classical sites in the country. It lies near Manavgat and the village of Selimiye, 78 km from Antalya in the province of Antalya.
It is located on the eastern part of the Pamphylian coast, which lies about 20 km east of the mouth of the Eurymedon River. Today, as in antiquity, the ancient city is situated on a small north-south peninsula about 1 km long and 400 m across.
Strabo and Arrian both record that Side was founded by Greek settlers from Cyme in Aeolis, a region of western Anatolia. This most likely occurred in the 7th century BC. Its tutelary deity was Athena, whose head adorned its coinage.
Dating from the tenth century B.C., its coinage bore the head of Athena (Minerva), the patroness of the city, with a legend. Its people, a piratical horde, quickly forgot their own language to adopt that of the aborigines.
Possessing a good harbour for small-craft boats, Side's natural geography made it one of the most important places in Pamphylia and one of the most important trade centres in the region. According to Arrian, when settlers from Cyme came to Side, they could not understand the dialect. After a short while, the influence of this indigenous tongue was so great that the newcomers forgot their native Greek and started using the language of Side. Excavations have revealed several inscriptions written in this language. The inscriptions, dating from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, remain undeciphered, but testify that the local language was still in use several centuries after colonisation. Another object found in the excavations at Side, a basalt column base from the 7th century BC and attributable to the Neo-Hittites, provides further evidence of the site's early history. The name Side may be Anatolian in origin, meaning pomegranate.
Cue sports techniques (usually more specific, e.g., billiards techniques, snooker techniques) are a vital important aspect of game play in the various cue sports such as carom billiards, pool, snooker and other games. Such techniques are used on each shot in an attempt to achieve an immediate aim such as scoring or playing a safety, while at the same time exercising control over the positioning of the cue ball and often the object balls for the next shot or inning.
In carom games, an advanced player's aim on most shots is to leave the cue ball and the object balls in position such that the next shot is of a less difficult variety to make the requisite carom, and so that the next shot is in position to be manipulated in turn for yet another shot; ad infinitum.
Similarly, in many pocket billiards games, an advanced player's aim is to manipulate the cue ball so that it is in position to pocket (pot) a chosen next object ball and so that that next shot can also be manipulated for the next shot, and so on. Whereas in the carom games, manipulation of the object ball's position is crucial as well on every shot, in some pool games this is not as large a factor because on a successful shot the object ball is pocketed. However, many shots in one-pocket, for example, have this same added object ball control factor for most shots.
The terms A-side and B-side refer to the two sides of 78 and 45 rpm phonograph records, whether singles or extended plays (EPs). The A-side usually featured the recording that the artist, record producer, or the record company intended to receive the initial promotional effort and then receive radio airplay, hopefully, to become a "hit" record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that has a history of its own: some artists, notably Elvis Presley, Little Richard, the Beatles, Chuck Berry, and Oasis, released B-sides that were considered as strong as the A-side and became hits in their own right. Creedence Clearwater Revival had hits, usually unintentionally, with both the B-sides of their A-side releases. Others took the opposite track: producer Phil Spector was in the habit of filling B-sides with on-the-spot instrumentals that no one would confuse with the A-side. With this practice, Spector was assured that airplay was focused on the side he wanted to be the hit side.

Riff: This turf is small but it's all we got, huh?
I wanna hold it like we always held it, with skin!
But if they say blades, I say blades but if they say
guns, I say guns. I say I want the Jets to be the
number one! To sail! To hold the sky!
Baby John: Rev us up!
Gee-Tar: Voom-va-voom!
Big Deal: Cha-chung!
Action: Wacko-jacko!
A-Rab: Digga-digga-dig-dum!
Riff: Now, protocality calls for a war council
between us and the Sharks to set the whole thing up.
So I will personally give the bad news to Bernardo.
Against the Sharks, we need every man we got we need
a lieutenant for the war council.
Action: That's me.
Riff: That's Tony.
Action: Who needs Tony?
Riff: We need Tony! He has a reputation bigger than
the whole west side.
Action: Tony don't belong no more.
Riff: Cut it, Action Tony and I started the Jets.
Action: What about the day we clobbered the Emeralds?
Big Deal: Which we couldn't have done without Tony.
Baby John: He saved my ever-loving neck!
Riff: Yeah, Tony has come through for us and he
always will.
Riff: When you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way
from your frst cigarette to your last dyin' day.
When you're a Jet, let 'em do what they can, you got
brothers around, you're a family man! You're never
alone, you're never disconnected! You're home with
your own when company's expected, you're well
protected! Then you are set with a capital J, which
you'll never forget till they cart you away. When
you're a Jet, you stay a Jet!
Riff: I know Tony like I know me and I guarantee you
can count him in.
Action: In, out, let's get crackin'.
A-Rab: Where you gonna find Bernardo?
Riff: He'll be at the dance at the gym tonight.
A-Rab: Yeah, but the gym's neutral territory.
Riff(innocently): A-Rab, I'm gonna make nice with
him! I'm only gonna challenge him.
A-Rab: Great, Daddy-o!
Riff: So everybody dress up sweet and sharp and meet
Tony and me at the dance at ten. And walk tall!
A-Rab: We always walk tall!
Baby John: We're Jets!
Action: The greatest!

Snowboy: When you're a Jet, you're the top cat in
town, you're the gold medal kid with the heavyweight
crown!
Diesel: When you're a Jet, you're the swingin'est

a king!
Jets: The Jets are in gear, our cylinders are
clickin'. The Sharks'll steer clear 'cause ev'ry
Puerto Rican's a lousy chicken! Here com the Jets
like a bat out of hell. Someone gets in our way,
someone don't feel so well. Here come the Jets
little world, step aside! Better go undeground,
better run, better hide. We're drawin' the line, so
