The Spanish invasion of Portugal between 5 May and 24 November 1762 was a main military episode of the Seven Years' War, where Spain and France were heavily defeated by the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance. It initially involved the forces of Spain and Portugal, before the French and British intervened in the conflict on the side of their respective allies.
During the first invasion, 22,000 Spaniards commanded by Nicolás de Carvajal, Marquis of Sarria, entered the Province of Alto Trás-os-Montes (northeast of Portugal) having Oporto as their ultimate goal. After occupying some fortresses, they were confronted with a national uprising. Taking advantage of the mountainous terrain, the guerrilla bands inflicted heavy losses on the invaders and practically cut off their communication lines with Spain. Threatened by starvation, the Spaniards tried to conquer Oporto, but were defeated in the battle of the Douro and at Montalegre before retreating to Spain. After this failure, the Spanish commander was replaced by Pedro Pablo Abarca de Bolea, Count of Aranda.
The land within the borders of current Portugal has been continuously settled and fought over since prehistoric times. The Celts and the Romans were followed by the Visigothic and the SuebiGermanic peoples, who were themselves later invaded by the Moors. These Muslim peoples were eventually expelled during the Christian Reconquista of the peninsula.
By 1139, Portugal had established itself as a kingdom independent from León. In the 15th and 16th centuries, as the result of pioneering the Age of Discovery, Portugal expanded Western influence and established the first global empire, becoming one of the world's major economic, political and military powers.
Francisco de Portugal, 3rd Count of Vimioso (1550–1582), Portuguese nobleman, Constable of António, Prior of Crato, during the War of the Portuguese Succession (1580–1583).

Why wasn’t Portugal conquered by Spain !?
Although much smaller than Spain, Portugal is actually the older country between the two. It emerged as a kingdom in 1128 as part of the Reconquista, a series of battles by Christian states to expel the Muslims from the Iberian peninsula. Spain was found in 1479, when the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Aragon united.
During the European wars of 18th century the two countries found themselves on opposite sides, Portuguese being aligned with Britain, and Spain with France. In 1762, Spain launched an unsuccessful attack on Portugal. A second attempt of Spain was in 1807, when together with France, they managed to successfully invade Portugal, but in the end France decided to take over both countries.
Portugal and Spain united in order to escape the French domination which they finally did, with the help of British Army, in 1814.
Starting with the 19th century, the two countries realized that the most of their wealth is coming from abroad and shifted their focus from their European lands to their overseas possessions and defending of their trade routes.
In the 20th century, the idea of invading Portugal was still alive, but the benefits of an invasion were never worth the effort for Spain.
