Its name is derived from its origins as a Portuguese station first settled in the 16th century. 'South' was added in order to distinguish itself from Portugal Cove, near Conception Bay.
Until 1992, many residents participated in the in shore cod fishery. More recently the economy has diversified and some being self-employed and others pursuing work in nearby communities.
There is an interpretation centre in Portugal Cove South, which is the starting point for guided tours of Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve which has a collection of some of the oldest known Ediacaran fossils. Cape Race is accessible by gravel road via Portugal Cove South, 19km away.
Portugal Cove-St. Philip's (47°37′40.9″N52°51′14.5″W / 47.628028°N 52.854028°W / 47.628028; -52.854028NST) is a rural seashore community located on the eastern Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Portugal Cove-St. Philip's was amalgamated in 1992, and is home to an estimated 6,000 people. Just 10 – 15 minutes from the provincial capital, and covering 56.43km², Portugal Cove-St. Philips is a rapidly growing community, and one of the largest municipalities in the Province. It borders the City of St. John's (provincial capital) to the east, and the Town of Paradise to the west. The current mayor is Moses Tucker, who was elected in September 2013.
The town’s population is fairly young with an average age of 33.2 years. Most people work outside the community, commuting to St. John's or Mount Pearl, daily. Businesses within the community itself, however, are numerous and include farms, convenience stores, restaurants & cafes, construction, gardening centres, hair salons, garages & service stations, bed & breakfasts, and a taxi service. The inhabitants are predominantly unilingual (English) and white.
The land within the borders of current Portugal has been continuously settled and fought over since prehistoric times. The Celts and the Romans were followed by the Visigothic and the SuebiGermanic peoples, who were themselves later invaded by the Moors. These Muslim peoples were eventually expelled during the Christian Reconquista of the peninsula.
By 1139, Portugal had established itself as a kingdom independent from León. In the 15th and 16th centuries, as the result of pioneering the Age of Discovery, Portugal expanded Western influence and established the first global empire, becoming one of the world's major economic, political and military powers.
Francisco de Portugal, 3rd Count of Vimioso (1550–1582), Portuguese nobleman, Constable of António, Prior of Crato, during the War of the Portuguese Succession (1580–1583).
