Located on the south coast of Wales in the county borough of Bridgend (historically in Mid Glamorgan) and around 25 miles west of Cardiff, is the town of Porthcawl.
Geographically Porthcawl is situated on a low headland overlooking the Bristol Channel, roughly halfway between Cardiff and Swansea. The name 'Porthcawl' is believed to mean either 'harbour of the sea kale' or 'harbour of the Gauls'.
Up until the early 19th century, Porthcawl as a settlement did not exist, save for a few neighbouring villages. In the 1820s a decision was made to build a harbour to service the expanding coal and iron industries of the South Wales valleys. Thus, Porthcawl became the terminus for a horse-drawn tramway for the transportation of these goods.

In 1853 railway industrialist John Brogden bought a controlling interest in the iron works in Tondu, near Bridgend, and, together with his four sons, enlarged the Porthcawl Dock with the addition
of an Inner Dock Basin in 1867. However, fierce competition from nearby docks, including Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot and Swansea, meant that Porthcawl's industrial future was limited, and its docks eventually closed shortly after the beginning of the 20th century.
Despite the demise of its docks, Porthcawl was able to reinvent itself as a seaside resort. In 1887 the promenade was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Since 1865 visitors could arrive here by train following the conversion of its earlier tramway into a railway. However, it was not until after the First World War that Porthcawl saw significant expansion. In 1920 Coney Beach Pleasure Park opened. Situated just east of the town centre, it is home to over 20 attractions including two roller coasters. In 1932 the Grand Pavilion Theatre was built on the seafront, where it stands to this day.
Porthcawl suffered a setback in 1963 with the closure of its railway station due to an alleged lack of ticket sales. Today the town is accessible via a bus service from Cardiff which also stops at Bridgend Bus Station.
Despite its controversial rail closure, Porthcawl remains a popular seaside resort. It is home to Trecco Bay which contains over 2000 static caravans, making it Europe's largest caravan park. This is situated next to Coney Beach Pleasure Park, and within walking distance to the town centre.
