Park Geun-hye(박근혜, Korean pronunciation:[pak.k͈ɯnh(j)e]; born 2 February 1952) is the eleventh and current President of South Korea. She is the first woman to be elected as President in South Korea and is serving the 18th presidential term. She also is the first female head of state in the history of Korea and first female president of an East Asian nation, and is the first South Korean president to have been born a South Korean citizen. Prior to her presidency, she was the chairwoman of the conservative Grand National Party (GNP) between 2004 and 2006 and between 2011 and 2012 (the GNP changed its name to the "Saenuri Party" in February 2012). Park was also a member of the Korean National Assembly and served four complete consecutive parliamentary terms as a constituency representative between 1998 and 2012; she started her fifth term as a proportional representative in June 2012. Her father was Park Chung-hee, President of South Korea from 1962 to 1979.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th staging of the FIFA World Cup which took place from 31 May to 30 June 2002 in South Korea and Japan. It was the first World Cup to be held in Asia, the first to be held on a continent other than Europe or the Americas, the last World Cup during which the golden goal rule was in force and the only World Cup to be jointly hosted by more than one nation as FIFA amended its statutes in 2004 to officially forbid co-hosting bids.Brazil won the tournament for a record fifth time, winning the final against Germany 2–0. The victory meant Brazil qualified for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup for the fifth time, representing the World. In the third place play-off match against South Korea, Turkey won 3-2 taking third place in their only second ever FIFA World Cup finals.China PR, Ecuador, Senegal and Slovenia made their first appearances at the finals with Turkey making its first appearance since 1954.
The tournament had several upsets and surprise results which included the defending champions France being eliminated in the group stage after earning a single point and second favourites Argentina also being eliminated in the group stage. Additionally, Turkey surprisingly took third place and South Korea managed to reach the semi-finals, beating Spain, Italy and Portugal en route. Another big shock came in the opening match of the tournament when underdog debutantes Senegal defeated defending champions France, going on to reach the quarter-finals only to be beaten by Turkey. However, the most potent team at the tournament, Brazil, prevailed and they became the first ever nation to win five World Cups.
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.
North Korea (listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl:조선민주주의인민공화국;hancha:朝鮮民主主義人民共和國;MR:Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.

South Korea opposition moves to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo
Opposition members in South Korea's parliament submitted a motion on Thursday to impeach Han Duck-soo, the country's prime minister and acting president. The challenge to Duck-soo comes after he refused to appoint three justices to fill the Constitutional Court bench that is reviewing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
After the impeachment motion was introduced, South Korea's lawmakers voted in favour of the three nominees of Constitutional Court judges at the plenary session, but they have yet to be formally appointed by Han.
Meanwhile, South Korea's ruling People Power Party urged the opposition party to stop its attempts to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo. "What the Democratic Party seeks to impeach today is not the acting president, Han Duck-soo, but the government it...

South Korean lawmakers voted to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo on December 27, 2024. The vote came two weeks after President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached on December 14, 2024. The opposition accused Han of refusing to accede to demands to complete Yoon’s impeachment, by refusing to appoint three new Constitutional Court judges. The court must uphold parliament’s decision to impeach Yoon to remove him from office. Yoon was impeached after his short-lived attempt to impose martial law, drawing the ire of the opposition and much of South Korea’s public.

"What the Democratic Party seeks to impeach today is not the acting president, Han Duck-soo, but the government itself, the livelihoods of the public, diplomacy, and South Korea," said acting PPP chair, Kweon Seong-dong.
If Han is impeached, the finance minister will assume the acting presidency. The Democratic Party has majority control of parliament, but there is disagreement between the parties and some constitutional scholars over whether a simple majority or a two-thirds vote is needed to impeach the acting president.

South Korean lawmakers have voted to impeach their acting president Han Duck-Su. He's the second president to be impeached in just two weeks. The opposition accused Han of obstructing due process after his predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached before Christmas for briefly declaring martial law. Both former presidents will now face a ruling by the constitutional court which will decide if the impeachments can be upheld.

국정원 “부상 북한군 1명 생포 사실 확인”
Beyond borders.
An injured North Korean soldier has reportedly been captured by Ukrainian troops in the battlefield.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Bae Eun-ji has more.
This photo shared on social media shows a wounded soldier reportedly captured by Ukrainian forces, likely making him the first North Korean prisoner of war.
According to a Ukrainian media outlet on Friday, the soldier was captured by the country's Special Operations Forces.
The soldier appears to be injured, but it was not immediately known whether he received medical treatment.
In response to the media report, South Korea's National Intelligence Service confirmed Friday that a wounded North Korean soldier has indeed been captured alive by Ukrainian forces.
It said it was able to confirm this through a real-time information-sharing system, with intel agencies of South Korea's allies and added that it will continue to closely monitor the situation.
This comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that more than 3-thousand North Korean troops have been killed and wounded during battle.
Kyiv had previously announced that Pyongyang had sent around 10 to 12 thousand soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces.
If the Ukrainian leader's claims are correct that means at least a quarter of North Korean troops deployed to Russia have been killed or injured.
"There are already over three thousand wounded and killed North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region. Russia is simply disposing of them in assaults."
Separately, Ukraine's military said it found a diary of a dead North Korean soldier, that describes tactics for shooting down Ukrainian drones.
The Special Operations Forces of Ukraine posted a picture of the diary on its social media on Thursday, which includes diagrams and a memo of how they should move in a group of three to lure and destroy the unmanned weapons.
The special forces said it deemed the method as using "living human bait."
As the war in Ukraine nears almost three years, the Ukrainian military recently released video footage of its forces killing North Korean soldiers with drones on the frontlines in the Kursk region, apparently showing that North Korean soldiers are ill-prepared for modern warfare.
Bae Eun-ji, Arirang News.

South Korea's parliament has voted to impeach President Park Geun Hye after a corruption scandal paralysed her administration and triggered massive street protests.
The parliamentary vote passed with a majority of more than two-thirds on Friday: 234

For more on this, we are joined by Fabian Kretschmer. He is a journalist who is based in Seoul but is currently in Berlin.

England and Brazil played out a memorable quarter-final encounter at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Japan/Korea. Michael Owen gave the Three Lions the lead before goals either side of the break from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho secured victory for the Selecao.
The question remains: was Ronaldinho's free-kick against David Seaman a wonder goal or fluke?
