The Park Chung Hee Era: The Transformation of South Korea
Harvard University Professor Ezra Vogel visits The Korea Society to discuss the monumental new political history he co-edited, The Park Chung Hee Era: The Transformation of South Korea. South Korea was mired in poverty in 1959, yet by 1979 was gaining significant economic influence both regionally and globally. Park is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social cost. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded, yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The chaebol received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapy—interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cuts—met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship. How Park Chung-Hee Transformed South Korea's Economy
South Korea's economic transformation from post-war privation to a booming, prosperous powerhouse is one of the more remarkable economic comeback stories of the 20th century, whose impacts are still felt today. In this interview, Thomas Byrne, President and CEO of the Korea Society, explores the complex role played in this economic transformation by former President Park Chung-Hee, a strongman leader who enforced authoritarian and sometimes brutal domestic policies and campaigned abroad to change South Korea's economic trajectory.

President Park Chung-hee's five-year economic development plan
I heard that he stopped by a small factory
Most factory workers are young children under the age of 20
President Park Chung-hee asked a woman what she wanted to do the most
Then the woman answered that she wanted to learn English the most
If you want to work at a factory, you need to know the English alphabet to sew
It was a factory that made exports, and it was written all in English on the work order
The female student who couldn't even come out of middle school answered that learning English is what she wants to do the most
President Park Chung-hee toured the factory and instructed the factory president through his accompanying entourage, so that he could work during the day and educate his employees on middle school courses, including English, at night
It's like a 晝耕夜讀
Also, President Park Chung-hee presented them with school uniforms. The students wore them to their hometowns and showed them off to their parents during the holidays
By the way, how is the society now? Isn't it scary to see the sky because people pay for meals with corporate cards and collect them by giving them express bus fares in front of a sacred court for their own bulletproofness?
