Lee Jae-yong, known professionally as Jay Y. Lee (born 23 June 1968), is a South Korean business magnate and the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics. He is the son of Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung, and is widely considered to be the future successor to his father's position. He is referred to as the "Crown Prince of Samsung" by the South Korean media, and speaks English and Japanese. Lee is estimated to be worth US$7.9 billion, making him the third wealthiest person in South Korea.
The name is pronounced as "Lei" in Cantonese, but is often spelled as Lee in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and many other overseas Chinese communities. In Macau, it is also spelled as Lei. In Indonesia it is commonly spelled as Lie.
The common Korean surname, Lee (also romanized as Yi, Ri, or Rhee), and the Vietnamese surname, Lý, are both derived from Li and are historically written with the same Chinese character, 李. The character also means "plum" or "plum tree".
According to tradition, the Li surname originated from the title Dali held by Gao Yao, a legendary minister of the Xia dynasty, and was originally written with the different character, 理. Laozi (Li Er), the founder of Taoism, was the first historical person known to have the surname and is regarded as the founding ancestor of the surname.
Lee is a given name derived from the English surname Lee (which is ultimately from a placename derived from Old English leah "clearing; meadow").
As the surname of Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), the name became popular in the American South after the Civil War, its popularity peaking in 1900 at rank 39 as a masculine name, and in 1955 at rank 182 as a feminine name. The name's popularity declined steadily in the second half of the 20th century, falling below rank 1000 by 1991 as a feminine name, and to 666 as of 2012 as a masculine name.
In the later 20th century, it also gained some popularity in the United Kingdom, peaking among the 20 most popular boys' names during the 1970s to 1980s, but it had fallen out of the top 100 by 2001.
Lee is also a hypocoristic form of the given names Ashley, Beverly, Kimberley, and Leslie (all of which are also derived from English placenames containing -leah as a second element; with the possible exception of Leslie, which may be an anglicization of a Gaelic placename).

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong receives presidential pardon to help S Korea "overcome economic crisis"
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has pardoned Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong as the economy faces numerous headwinds. This would also speed up Lee's return to the biggest family-controlled chaebol and the world's largest memory chipmaker. Analysts believe the presidential pardon could grant Lee more freedom to conduct business, and may mean big M&A moves are around the corner. Others have warned that legal risks still persist as Lee still faces charges of fraud and stock manipulation in another ongoing trial.

Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong approved as chairman while the company posts earnings shock in Q3 report
이재용, '삼성 회장' 타이틀 달았다... 삼성전자 3분기 영업이익 31.4% 급감
Big news for South Korean tech giant... Samsung Electronics.
Lee Jae-yong,... who served as vice president of Samsung for 10 years, has been approved as chairman.
The company also reported its earnings for the third quarter on Thursday... with earnings sharply down due to the sluggish memory semiconductor sector.
Lee Rae-hyun reports.
Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics has been named as the company's chairman.
The South Korean tech giant said... that the board of directors approved Lee's step up from vice chairman to chairman on Thursday.
This marks ten years since Lee was appointed as vice chairman in 2012.
Although approval from the company's board of directors is not needed,... the chairmanship was ultimately decided based on the company's principle of board-based management.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics on Thursday... posted an earnings shock for the third quarter of this year.
The company reported that operating profit were down over 31 percent... compared to a year earlier... badly missing market forecasts.
Operating profits came in at around 10-point-8 trillion won... or about 7-point-6 billion U.S. dollars.
Despite the surprising figures,... sales increased 3-point-7 percent on-year in the third quarter... to over 76 trillion won... or about 54-point-2 billion dollars, an all-time high for Samsung for any third quarter.
Net income, meanwhile, was down 23-point-6 percent on-year.
Analysts say the decline in the memory semiconductor sector was a big reason for the downturn.
Profits from the company's chip business came to 5-point-1 trillion won... or around 3-point-6 billion dollars.
This is a sharp decline from the 10 trillion won, or 7-point-6 billion dollars posted a year earlier.
Other than chips, sales of smartphones saw a rise... largely driven by the release of new models and high won-dollar exchange rates.
The display and home appliances sector, however, plunged... as there was low demand for TVs due to the global economic slowdown.
Meanwhile, some analysts say Samsung's fourth-quarter earnings are expected to dip further... as memory chip prices continue to fall.
But the world's top maker of memory chips and smartphones forecasted that despite geopolitical uncertainties, demand for its semiconductors may recover later in 2023... as new data centers and computers require more memory.
