Irving Berlin (born Israel Isidore Baline, May 11, 1888 – September 22, 1989) was an American composer and lyricist, widely considered one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His music forms a great part of the Great American Songbook. Born in Imperial Russia, Berlin arrived in the United States at the age of five. He published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy", in 1907, receiving 33 cents for the publishing rights, and had his first major international hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911. He also was an owner of the Music Box Theatre on Broadway.
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" sparked an international dance craze in places as far away as Berlin's native Russia, which also "flung itself into the ragtime beat with an abandon bordering on mania." Over the years he was known for writing music and lyrics in the American vernacular: uncomplicated, simple and direct, with his stated aim being to "reach the heart of the average American," whom he saw as the "real soul of the country." In doing so, said Walter Cronkite, at Berlin's 100th birthday tribute, he "helped write the story of this country, capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives."
Berlin is the name of a sculpture on the Tauentzienstraße in western Berlin, the capital of Germany.
First conceived in 1985 and unveiled by the husband-and-wife sculpting team of Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff and Martin Matschinsky in 1987, the sculpture's principal motif, a "broken chain", was meant to symbolize the severed connections between West and East Berlin due to the construction of the Berlin Wall.
Even though the Wall has since been dismantled, the sculpture was bought by the city from Mrs. Matschinsky-Denninghoff to commemorate the unfortunate chapter in German history.
Berlin was one of eight sculptures designed during "Skulpturenboulevard Kurfürstendamm" (Boulevard of Sculptures: Kurfürstendamm), an event commissioned by the city of West Berlin to celebrate Berlin's 750th anniversary in 1987. Of the eight sculptures unveiled, three were allowed to remain past the anniversary year (Berlin, Pyramide, and Cadillacs in Form der nackten Maja); the city and Deutsche Bank acquired Berlin after its original lease had expired.
Berlin is a train station in Berlin, Connecticut. It is located in the Kensington neighborhood. It is on the New Haven–Springfield Line and is served by Amtrak's Northeast Regional, New Haven–Springfield Shuttle, and the Vermonter trains. The station was originally built in 1900 by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad.
In 2010, the building was assessed in preparation for a rehabilitation project to address interior water damage and the need to replace the electrical and heating and air conditioning systems. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Transportation plans to add a new commuter service called the Hartford Line in collaboration with Amtrak and the federal government that will run between New Haven and Springfield, Massachusetts. As of late 2015, funding had been secured and the service is scheduled to begin operation in early 2018.
Noted features of the historic depot include prominent brick quoins and arches, as well as large arched tripartite windows embellished with colorful stained glass. The waiting room is still dominated by the original ticket office, whose corners are gently rounded. Resembling those in other early 20th century New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad facilities, it is a three-sided structure placed against the western wall of the station; the bottom third is covered in bead board while the upper portion features recessed rectangular panels. Dentil molding finishes off the upper edge of the office wall. With many of its interior finishes largely unaltered, Berlin is often considered one of the best preserved of Connecticut’s small 19th century depots.
Berlin can refer to several German 9 cm wavelength microwave radars of WWII. These were developed after the capture of examples of the British cavity magnetron in the H2S radar.
London is the fifth album by the British rock band Jesus Jones in 2001 through Koch Records. Following the commercial failure of 1997's Already which led to the band and EMI parting ways, the band took a hiatus before regathering for the recording of London for Koch/Mi5 Recordings, with a more alternative rock approach as opposed to the techno sounds on their previous albums. The album had low-key promotion, initially only being released in the United States. Two EP's were released from the album, "Nowhere Slow" and "In the Face Of All This".
Already, the band's fourth studio album, was released in 1997 to mixed reviews and very bad commercial success, where it only reached 161 in the UK Albums Chart (their third album Perverse reached number 6 in contrast.) They band chose to focus on the US tour following the album's release. The band and EMI/Food Records parted ways in 1998, for unspecified reasons but persumably due to record sales. The band ultimately fell into recording hiatus following this although Tony Arther joined the band in 1998/99 as the band's drummer to replace Gen, who left during the Already era.
The County of London was a county of England from 1889 to 1965, corresponding to the area known today as Inner London. It was created as part of the general introduction of elected county government in England, by way of the Local Government Act 1888. The Act created an administrative County of London, which included within its territory the City of London. However, the City of London and the County of London formed separate counties for "non-administrative" purposes. The local authority for the county was the London County Council (LCC), which initially performed only a limited range of functions, but gained further powers during its 76-year existence. The LCC provided very few services within the City of London, where the ancient Corporation monopolised local governance, as it still does. In 1900 the lower-tier civil parishes and district boards were replaced with 28 new metropolitan boroughs. The territory of the county was 74,903 acres (303.12 km2) in 1961. During its existence there was a long-term decline in population as more residents moved into the outer suburbs; there were periodic reviews of the local government structures in the greater London area and several failed attempts to expand the boundaries of the county. In 1965, the London Government Act 1963 replaced the county with the much larger Greater London administrative area.
London (1926) is a British silent film, directed by Herbert Wilcox and starring Dorothy Gish. The film was adapted by Wilcox from a short story by popular author Thomas Burke. The British Film Institute considers this to be a lost film.
London belongs in the canon of "Limehouse" silent films, pioneered by 1919's hugely successful Broken Blossoms which starred Gish's sister Lillian. These films were set in what was then London's Chinatown, an area which was generally perceived as dangerous, crime-ridden, decadent and immoral; as alien, impenetrable and exotic to most Londoners as if it had been on the other side of the world. Limehouse films, invariably featuring a young, beautiful and innocent English girl falling prey to shady, sinister characters who wished her ill, found a huge market both in the UK and overseas, and became an ongoing feature of 1920s silent cinema.
The Limehouse genre was as popular in the U.S. as in the UK, and with the awareness of the enormous revenue potential of the American market, London was tailored by Wilcox as a big-budget production with that audience in mind. He engaged American star Dorothy Gish for the leading role, and Gish's contract earned her £1,000 per week, an exceptional amount for its time.

WALTER CRONKITE introduces the closing of the show by paying tribute to IRVING BERLIN. Kennedy Center Honors pays tribute to IRVING BERLIN, who had turned 100 years old on May 11, 1987, by performing one of the zillions of wonderful songs that he wrote during his lifetime. JIMMY STEWART comes on stage to introduce the song "God Bless American" and recites the first part of the song. It's then sung by gentlemen in white suits marching onto stage (they don't say who?).... Micah Hejlik 3 I wish that Irving Berlin would be a Kennedy Center Honoree. But, he had demands that the committee would not meet. He wanted to surpass his 100th birthday and wanted to be there in person. But, since he was in poor health, he cannot appear in public.

Some of our most cherished holiday songs, including "White Christmas" and "Easter Parade," as well as "God Bless America," were written by the prolific composer-lyricist Irving Berlin (1888-1989), a Jewish immigrant from Russia. Mo Rocca talks about the remarkable life of Berlin, who wrote hundreds of standards, with his granddaughter, Katherine Swett; Broadway musical director and conductor Andy Einhorn; Josh Perelman, Chief Curator at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, and ultra-Orthodox singer Shulem Lemmer. Just a quick tour of the newly completed Berlin CT Train Station that will serve both AMTRAK and CT Rail's Hartford Train Line. Job well done CT DOT!!!!
After my last day of school and being vaccinated I decided it was time to change things up so HartfordLine Railfan and I hopped on CTrail 4458. We watched the evening rush at Berlin. We were also able to catch CSO-2 doing 50 mph through the station in the daylight. Unfortunately due to Amtrak 148 being late we saw both this and CSO-2’s return from the CTrail 4467. I tried to film this however it was to dark to see anything. All around it was a great day and fun to be on a train again. Thank you so much for watching and God Bless!!!

I am pretty disappointed that I mostly missed that first train, but I thought this was a fun visit to Berlin and it was interesting anyway. I will also be uploading the third day of trains on the northeast corridor probably within the next week when I have time.
