KENNEDY CENTER HONORS TRIBUTE TO IRVING BERLIN - "GOD BLESS AMERICA", 1987
WALTER CRONKITE introduces the closing of the show by paying tribute to IRVING BERLIN. Kennedy Center Honors pays tribute to IRVING BERLIN, who had turned 100 years old on May 11, 1987, by performing one of the zillions of wonderful songs that he wrote during his lifetime. JIMMY STEWART comes on stage to introduce the song "God Bless American" and recites the first part of the song. It's then sung by gentlemen in white suits marching onto stage (they don't say who?)....

I wish that Irving Berlin would be a Kennedy Center Honoree. But, he had demands that the committee would not meet. He wanted to surpass his 100th birthday and wanted to be there in person. But, since he was in poor health, he cannot appear in public.

American songsmith Irving Berlin
Some of our most cherished holiday songs, including "White Christmas" and "Easter Parade," as well as "God Bless America," were written by the prolific composer-lyricist Irving Berlin (1888-1989), a Jewish immigrant from Russia. Mo Rocca talks about the remarkable life of Berlin, who wrote hundreds of standards, with his granddaughter, Katherine Swett; Broadway musical director and conductor Andy Einhorn; Josh Perelman, Chief Curator at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, and ultra-Orthodox singer Shulem Lemmer.

For much of his career Berlin could not read sheet music, and was such a limited piano player that he could only play in the key of F-sharp using his custom piano equipped with a transposing lever.
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" sparked an international dance craze in places as far away as Berlin's native Russia, which also "flung itself into the ragtime beat with an abandon bordering on mania". Over the years he was known for writing music and lyrics in the American vernacular: uncomplicated, simple and direct, with his stated aim being to "reach the heart of the average American," whom he saw as the "real soul of the country". In doing so, said Walter Cronkite, at Berlin's 100th birthday tribute, he "helped write the story of this country, capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives".
He wrote hundreds of songs, many becoming major hits, which made him famous before he turned thirty. During his 60-year career he wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films, with his songs nominated eight times for
Academy Awards. Many songs became popular themes and anthems, including "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "Easter Parade", "Puttin' on the Ritz", "Cheek to Cheek", "White Christmas", "Happy Holiday", "Anything You Can Do ", and "There's No Business Like Show Business". His Broadway musical and 1943 film This Is the Army, with Ronald Reagan, had Kate Smith singing Berlin's "God Bless America" which was first performed in 1938.

George Gershwin - The Tragic End of a Musical Prodigy | Biographical Documentary
One of the best loved composers and songwriters of all time, George Gershwin had no interest in music as a boy. But when he was 10 his parents bought a piano for his older brother, and to everyone’s surprise, he was able to pick out tunes he had learned by following the keys on a neighbour’s pianola.
He dropped out of school at 15 to work as a song plugger, pounding out ditties for people buying sheet music, but within three years his songs were being included in Broadway musicals.
The rest is history, he achieved worldwide fame with his musical theatre, movie scores and genre crossing jazz inspired classical music. He was intelligent, charming, witty, he painted, kept himself fit and had no secret vices.
But at the age of 38 he started behaving erratically, had an absence attack when ...

The film traces Gershwin's rise, from his first big hit "Swanee" (performed by Al Jolson, playing himself), to his collaborations with lyricist brother Ira (Herbert Rudley) to the heights of artistic achievement with the debut of "Rhapsody in Blue" at Aeolian Hall.

George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned popular, jazz and classical genres. Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928).
Gershwin studied piano under Charles Hambitzer and composition with Rubin Goldmark, Henry Cowell, and Joseph Brody. He began his career as a song plugger but soon started composing Broadway theater works with his brother Ira Gershwin and with Buddy DeSylva. He moved to Paris, intending to study with Nadia Boulanger, but she refused him, afraid that rigorous classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style; Maurice Ravel voiced similar objections when Gershwin inquired about studying with him. He subsequently composed "An American in Paris", returned to New York City and wrote "Porgy and Bess" with Ira and DuBose Heyward. Initially a commercial failure, it came to be considered one of the most important American operas of the twentieth century and an American cultural classic.
Gershwin moved to Hollywood and composed numerous film scores. He died in 1937, only 38 years old. His compositions have been adapted for use in film and television, with many becoming jazz standards.

But at the age of 38 he started behaving erratically, had an absence attack when playing at a concert and hallucinations of the smell of burning rubber. Tragically his symptoms were dismissed as psychological, and he was dead within six months.

https://wn.com/George_Gershwin_The_Tragic_End_Of_A_Musical_Prodigy_|_Biographical_Documentary
But at the age of 38 he started behaving erratically, had an absence attack when playing at a concert and hallucinations of the smell of burning rubber. Tragically his symptoms were dismissed as psychological, and he was dead within six months.

Edward Jablonski's biography, Gershwin, despite being quite old now, is still the most thorough of the numerous Gershwin biographies. I have listed this on my Amazon Store Page. https://www.amazon.com/shop/professorgraemeyorston

ÜBERLIN
Hey now, take your pills and
Hey now, make your breakfast
Hey now, comb your hair and off to work
Crash land, no illusions, no collision, no intrusion
My imagination run away
I know, I know, I know what I am chasing

I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, star, star
Hey now, take the U-Bahn, five stops, change the station
Hey now, don't forget that change will save you
Hey now, count a thousand-million people, that's astounding
Chasing through the city with their stars on bright
I know, I know, I know what I am chasing

We don't want a nepotistic, ironic ponse down Redchurch Street.
We just want to listen to a bit of lovely R.E.M. and be Normal In Shoreditch.

This video was made as a tribute to Sam Taylor-Wood's UBerlin for REM, starring Aaron Johnson.
This is the TEL AVIV (Israeli) version, and now it's your turn.
Would you create your City version?
We understood why this particular video was made for this song and felt the urge to make our version.
We would love to see versions made from across the world. Would you join us in becoming a UBerliner? Bring your CITY to life and share your video.
And of course, we would like to thank our wonderful source of inspiration: Sam Taylor-Wood, Aaron Johnson and REM.

ÜBERLIN
Hey now, take your pills and
Hey now, make your breakfast
Hey now, comb your hair and off to work
Crash land, no illusions, no collision, no intrusion
My imagination run away
I know, I know, I know what I am chasing
I know, I know, I know that this is changing me
I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, star, star
Hey now, take the U-Bahn, five stops, change the station
Hey now, don't forget that change will save you
Hey now, count a thousand-million people, that's astounding
Chasing through the city with their stars on bright
I know, I know, I know what I am chasing
I know, I know, I know that this is changing me
I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, star, star
I will make it through the day
And then the day becomes the night
I will make it through the night
Hey, man, tell me something, are you off to somewhere?
Do you want to go with me tonight?
I know, I know, I know that this is changing
We walk the streets to feel the ground I'm chasing: ÜBerlin
I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, star, star
I will make it through the day
And then the day becomes the night
I will make it through the night
