Florence, Lady Baker or Barbara Szász; Maria Freiin von Sass; Barbara Szasz; Barbara Maria Szász; Barbara Maria Szasz (6 August 1841 – 11 March 1916) was a Transylvanian (Hungarian) explorer. Born in Hungary, she became an orphan and was sold as a slave to Samuel White Baker. Together they went in search of the source of the River Nile and found Lake Albert. They journeyed to Samuel Baker's home in England where they were married and she became Lady Baker. She later returned to Africa with her husband to try and put down the slave trade. They both retired and died in Devon.
Early life
Some sources say that Florence Barbara Maria von Sass was born in Aiud in 1841. The story handed down in the Baker family is that she was the daughter of a Székely officer from a Hungarian noble family, who had estates in Transylvania, called von Sas (a branch of the von Sass family) and whilst she was young, during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 "her father and brothers had been killed before her eyes". As an adolescent, she spoke Hungarian, Romanian, German and Turkish. She may have been fourteen when she was being sold as a slave in Vidin, a town and fortified port on the River Danube in what is now Bulgaria, in January 1859. According to certain accounts, she was destined to be owned by the Pasha of Vidin but she had been spotted by Samuel Baker. He and Maharaja Duleep Singh were both on a hunting trip. Samuel Baker bribed the guards and Florence was allowed to escape into his ownership.
On October 21, 2014, it was announced that Stephen Frears would next direct a biopic Florence, scripted by Nicholas Martin, about Florence Foster Jenkins, a famous opera singer.Meryl Streep was set to play Jenkins while Hugh Grant was set to play stage actor St. Clair Bayfield, Jenkins' partner and manager.Michael Kuhn and Tracey Seaward would produce the film, which Pathé would finance and handle the sales at American Film Market. In November 2014, the film was sold to international distributors, and Pathé would distribute the film in the UK, France and Switzerland.Simon Helberg was set on March 27, 2015 to play Cosmé McMoon, pianist and the accompanist to Jenkins.Rebecca Ferguson was added to the cast on April 1, 2015 to play Bayfield's suffering wife. On April 13, 2015, Nina Arianda joined the film to play Agnes Stark, a showgirl struggling to step-up in the social life with the help of her husband.
The Florence City Company, formed in 1849, organized the original layout of lots and streets in Florence. It also oversaw construction of the Florence Hotel and wharf. The Florence Iron Works was established in 1857 along the Delaware River by Richard Jones. It continued as a major force in the economy of the community, especially after ownership was transferred to Richard D. Wood in 1867. The 1900 United States Census reported that a good portion of the workforce was dependent on the foundry.
Played By: David Walliams Appearances: Season 3
Alan works for the Donkey Hospice in the town of Achingballs. After contributors give him some money, he blatantly places stickers on embarrassing body parts, such as the genital region or breasts and on someone's rear in a deleted scene. He makes one appearance in Series 3.
Peter Andre
Played by: David Walliams Episodes: Radio Show; Season 1, episodes 4 and 5 Catchphrase: I love you Anne and I need you Anne
Peter Andre is a royal BBC correspondent who gets sacked after first making bizarre and inaccurate claims about the Royal Family (such as Prince Charles having magical powers, describing The Queen as "The Main One" and mistaking Princess Eugenie for her mother, Sarah, Duchess of York) and then declaring his love for Princess Anne through song. He later attempts to enter a royal garden party to give her some drawings, despite being disheveled and without trousers, and is turned away by police. The character's name is a reference to the singer. There are also two deleted scenes in which Peter Andre appears backstage at the Royal Variety Performance and at a drug rehab centre.

The Nile Quest | #ProjectAfrica
The Nile is the longest river in Africa and the disputed longest river in the world. Its incredible length spans over 11 countries, from Egypt all the way to Tanzania. Now, we are aware of its length and size, but in the early 19th century, to European explorers, the Nile was a mysterious and fabled river that promised adventure and riches if one were to discover its source. What followed were several exploration voyages deep into Africa. These voyages are fruitful ground for great tales already, but what is more… most of them were curiously intertwined.

During the late 1830s, explorers embarked on a quest for a legendary goal: to discover the source of the Nile. The Ottoman governor at the time, Muhammed Ali of Egypt, had already launched two expeditions in those years in order to seek economic expansion into Sudan. These expeditions proved fruitful: the navigable head of the Nile was found at a place called Gondokoro. It now was just the rapids to Gondokoro’s south that stood between adventurers and the source of the Nile. Considering the time frame, unfortunately, many adventurers and traders that moved south were no more than ordinary bandits, raiding the African lands for their wealth, resources and slaves. Regardless of the moral concerns, these marauders did contribute to the geographical knowledge of the region, as they often navigated through uncharted lands.
In the 1840s it was missionaries that worked inland from Mombasa that changed the course of exploration of the Nile. Whenever a caravan of Arab traders would pass by, Ludwig Krapf, Johann Rebmann and Johann Erhardt would ask for information about the places they had travelled. According to these traders, there were great lakes and huge mountains. When Krapf and Rebmann traveled into the direction several months later they are said to have seen the mountains for themselves, covered in snow.
These weren’t just generic mountains but turned out to be Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. These mountains could very well have given rise to the White Nile, one of the two main tributaries of the Nile. The men were awarded a medal by the Paris Geographical Society and, in contrast, severely ridiculed by the British… There was a bit of disparity between the two nations. Nevertheless, the fact that they had seen the mountains gave other explorers the idea to attempt and approach the source of the Nile from Africa’s East Coast.
