In many countries the public telephone network has a single emergency telephone number (sometimes known as the universal emergency telephone number or the emergency services number) that allows a caller to contact local emergency services for assistance. The emergency number differs from country to country; it is typically a three-digit number so that it can be easily remembered and dialed quickly. Some countries have a different emergency number for each of the different emergency services; these often differ only by the last digit.
Configuration and operation
The emergency telephone number is a special case in the country's telephone number plan. In the past, calls to the emergency telephone number were often routed over special dedicated circuits. Though with the advent of electronic exchanges these calls are now often mixed with ordinary telephone traffic, they still may be able to access circuits that other traffic cannot. Often the system is set up so that once a call is made to an emergency telephone number, it must be answered. Should the caller abandon the call, the line may still be held until the emergency service answers and releases the call.
The film was remade in 1962 as Emergency starring Glyn Houston.
Synopsis
The film centres around a race against the clock to locate three blood donors each able to donate one pint of a rare type of blood to save the life of a young girl suffering from leukaemia. The doctor in charge of treating the girl enlists the assistance of police officer Inspector Lane in order to assist in the search for suitable donors. The three donors are each from very different backgrounds, a white boxer, a black sailor, and finally a murderer who has been on the run from the police for a number of years. The boxer's donation is fairly straightforward, having only to avoid his manager, the sailor's donation is more complicated, following a war-time incident where a dying Nazi soldier refused to accept his offer of a donation which he attributes to racism, he initially refuses to donate, until it is explained to him that the Nazi officer refused his donation for reasons that can be attributed to the Nazi's Master raceideology.
Archaeology indicates that the site of Kursk was settled in the 5th or 4th centuryBCE. The settlement was fortified and included Slavs at least as early as the 8th centuryCE.
The first written record of Kursk is dated 1032. It was mentioned as one of Severian towns by Prince Igor in The Tale of Igor's Campaign: "Saddle, brother, your swift steeds. As to mine, they are ready, saddled ahead, near Kursk; as to my Kurskers, they are famous knights—swaddled under war-horns, nursed under helmets, fed from the point of the lance; to them the trails are familiar, to them the ravines are known, the bows they have are strung tight, the quivers, unclosed, the sabers, sharpened; themselves, like gray wolves, they lope in the field, seeking for themselves honor, and for their prince, glory."
K-141 Kursk (full Russian name Атомная Подводная Лодка «Курск» (АПЛ «Курск»), Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka "Kursk" (APL "Kursk"), meaning "Nuclear-powered submarine Kursk") was an Oscar-II class nuclear-powered cruise-missile submarine of the Russian Navy which was lost with all hands when it sank in the Barents Sea on 12 August 2000. It was a Project 949A Антей (Antey, Antaeus; NATO reporting name "Oscar II") submarine.
Work on building Kursk began in 1990 at Severodvinsk, near Arkhangelsk. Launched in 1994, it was commissioned in December of that year. It was the penultimate Oscar II class submarine designed and approved in the Soviet era.
Capabilities
The Antey design represented the highest achievement of Soviet nuclear submarine technology. They were the largest attack submarines ever built. It was built to defeat an entire United States aircraft carrier group. A single Type 65 torpedo carried a 450kg (990lb) warhead powerful enough to sink an aircraft carrier. Both missiles and torpedoes could be equipped with nuclear warheads. She was 30ft (9.1m) longer than any other Oscar I-class submarine. The senior officers had individual staterooms and the entire crew had access to a gymnasium.
Ukraine (i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian:Україна, tr.Ukraina[ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is currently in dispute with Russia over the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014 but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise as Ukrainian. Including Crimea, Ukraine has an area of 603,628km2 (233,062sqmi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe and the 46th largest country in the world, and a population of about 44.5 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire, and later submerged fully into Russia. Two brief periods of independence occurred during the 20th century, once near the end of World War I and another during World War II, but both occasions would ultimately see Ukraine's territories conquered and consolidated into a Soviet republic, a situation that persisted until 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War.
Russia has declared a state of emergency in its Kursk region after Ukrainian forces apparently managed to advance almost 20 kilometres from the border.
Moscow claimed a thousand Ukrainian troops backed by tanks and armoured vehicles had crossed over the border, while video has emerged purportedly showing dozens of Russian soldiers being captured.

Kursk incursion: How significant is Ukraine's advance into Russian territory?
Ukraine's incursion into Russia is "big" and represents much more than just a raid, our security and defence analyst Professor Michael Clarke says.
Fighting has continued in the Kursk region of Russia for a fourth day after Ukrainian forces smashed through the border earlier this week.
There is much that remains unclear and Ukraine remains tight-lipped about what is happening - and what its broader goal for the operation is.

The convoy was likely travelling to reinforce the Russian presence in the settlement of Korenevo about 12 miles away, the closest point Russian sources have reported combat.

Vladimir Putin has told an emergency meeting of his national security council that Ukraine is conducting a “large-scale provocation” after its cross-border raid into Russia.
Hundreds of Ukrainian troops from Ukraine’s 22nd mechanised brigade supported by dozens of tanks and armoured vehicles were reported to have launched the attack into the frontier region of Kursk.

A Ukrainian rocket attack left a trail of dead Russian soldiers and burnout military vehicles in “one of the bloodiest strikes of the war”.
Night-time footage emerged early on Friday showing what appeared to be a line of military trucks ablaze on a road in the Kursk region of Russia.
A separate video shared on Russian social media on Friday appeared to show a car driver passing the aftermath of the apparent strike.
The bodies of dead Russian soldiers could be seen in the backs of some of the 14 trucks that were in the convoy.
Other vehicles appeared to be completely burnt out after the strike, which Russian military bloggers said was carried out with US-donated Himars rocket launchers.
The convoy appeared to be transporting reinforcements to tackle Kyiv’s surprise raid on the Kursk region.
The Telegraph geolocated the two video clips to the E38 highway in the Russian town of Oktyabr'skoe, more than 20 miles from the border with Ukraine.
The convoy was likely travelling to reinforce the Russian presence in the settlement of Korenevo about 12 miles away, the closest point Russian sources have reported combat.

Vladimir Putin has accused Kyiv of launching a “major provocation”, after Moscow claimed that some 300 Ukrainian soldiers, supported by tanks and armoured vehicles, had launched a cross-border attack into the Kursk region.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of the security council in Moscow on Wednesday, the Russian president also accused Ukrainian forces of “firing indiscriminately” at civilian buildings and residences.

At a meeting with security officials earlier, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said that "the defence ministry's main task is to push, to kick the enemy out of our territory".
He also said that Ukraine's motivation for its surprise offensive inside Russia was to improve its negotiating position.
Some 121,000 people have evacuated from Russia’s western Kursk region, officials say, with another 59,000 told to leave.
Ukrainian forces have advanced up to 18 miles (30km) inside Russia - the deepest incursion since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
