John Betjeman
Sir John Betjeman, CBE (/ˈbɛtʃəmən/; 28 August 1906 – 19 May 1984) was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death.
He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture. He began his career as a journalist and ended it as one of the most popular British Poets Laureate and a much-loved figure on British television.
Life
Early life and education
Betjeman was born "John Betjemann". His parents, Mabel (née Dawson) and Ernest Betjemann, had a family firm at 34–42 Pentonville Road which manufactured the kind of ornamental household furniture and gadgets distinctive to Victorians.
He changed his name to the less German-looking "Betjeman" during the First World War. His father's forebears had actually come from the present day Netherlands and had, ironically, added the extra -n during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War to avoid the anti-Dutch sentiment existing at the time more than a century earlier, setting up their home and business in Islington, London.

Branch line
A branch line is a secondary railway line which branches off a more important through route, usually a main line. A very short branch line may be called a spur line. David Blyth Hanna, the first president of the Canadian National Railway, said that although most branch lines cannot pay for themselves, they are essential to make main lines pay.
United Kingdom
Many British branch lines were closed as a result of the "Beeching Axe" in the 1960s, although some have been re-opened as heritage railways.
The smallest branch line that is still in operation in the UK is the Stourbridge Town Branch Line from Stourbridge Junction going to Stourbridge Town. Operating on a single track the journey is 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometres) long and the train takes around two and a half minutes to complete its journey.
Singapore
Examples of spur lines in Singapore include: Changi Extension Line.
Hong Kong
Examples of spur lines in Hong Kong include: Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, South Tseung Kwan O Spur Line, Racecourse Spur Line.

Branch MRT Line
The Branch MRT Line was the third Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore, initially operated as a branch to the existing East West Line. The line was 6.5 km long with 4 stations, and was operated by the SMRT Corporation. Travelling from one end of this line to the other end took about ten minutes, and this line was coloured brown and khaki on the rail map. The line is now part of the North South Line.
History
The line started operations on 10 March 1990, and was merged into the North South Line when the North South Line Woodlands Extension opened on 10 February 1996. The station codes for Bukit Batok to Choa Chu Kang stations were changed to N23, N22 and N21 respectively, subsequently to their current code on the North South Line with the revamp of the system map on 31 July 2001.

The bells of waiting Advent ring,
The Tortoise stove is lit again
And lamp-oil light across the night
Has caught the streaks of winter rain
In many a stained-glass window sheen
From Crimson Lake to Hookers Green.
The holly in the windy hedge
And round the Manor House the yew
Will soon be stripped to deck the ledge,
The altar, font and arch and pew,
So that the villagers can say
'The church looks nice' on Christmas Day.
Provincial Public Houses blaze,
Corporation tramcars clang,
On lighted tenements I gaze,
Where paper decorations hang,
And bunting in the red Town Hall
Says 'Merry Christmas to you all'.
And London shops on Christmas Eve
Are strung with silver bells and flowers
As hurrying clerks the City leave
To pigeon-haunted classic towers,
And marbled clouds go scudding by
The many-steepled London sky.
And girls in slacks remember Dad,
And oafish louts remember Mum,
And sleepless children's hearts are glad.
And Christmas-morning bells say 'Come!'
Even to shining ones who dwell
Safe in the Dorchester Hotel.
And is it true,
This most tremendous tale of all,
Seen in a stained-glass window's hue,
A Baby in an ox's stall ?
The Maker of the stars and sea
Become a Child on earth for me ?
And is it true? For if it is,
No loving fingers tying strings
Around those tissued fripperies,
The sweet and silly Christmas things,
Bath salts and inexpensive scent
And hideous tie so kindly meant,
No love that in a family dwells,

The Branch Line Theme - Extended (Series 1)
Let's revisit this theme. For such a bouncy and catchy theme, it was only used twice. I guess they thought it wasn't needed much but for me, it makes great montage music so I decided to extend it a little. Just added in a bridge section in typical Thomas/Pat/Wommit fashion. A Merry Christmas to one and all!
Read by the author - former Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. Here Sir John Betjeman invites us to share his wit and his deeply Christian sentiment. Recorded in 1980.
Thersites, of figures-of-speech.com writes:
"How pleasant, then, to turn to John Betjeman, poet and human being. Human beings are never more needed than at Christmas – poets, too, if you think about it. His poem 'Christmas', from his book A Few Late Chrysanthemums (1954), is everything a Christmas poem should be: cheerful, amusing, light-hearted, profound and deeply Christian. It is immediately accessible: it delivers meaning immediately and on further reflection much deeper meaning.
Read this at a carol service and the members of the congregation are not hunched down in the pews, pondering conundrums of misery and doubt; they are smiling, filled with light and Christmas beatitude. At the time of those school carol services Betjeman's book had only been published a handful of years and smelt too much of freshness and modernity".

The Poem
The bells of waiting Advent ring,
The Tortoise stove is lit again
And lamp-oil light across the night
Has caught the streaks of winter rain
In many a stained-glass window sheen
From Crimson Lake to Hookers Green.
The holly in the windy hedge
And round the Manor House the yew
Will soon be stripped to deck the ledge,
The altar, font and arch and pew,
So that the villagers can say
'The church looks nice' on Christmas Day.
Provincial Public Houses blaze,
Corporation tramcars clang,
On lighted tenements I gaze,
Where paper decorations hang,
And bunting in the red Town Hall
Says 'Merry Christmas to you all'.
And London shops on Christmas Eve
Are strung with silver bells and flowers
As hurrying clerks the City leave
To pigeon-haunted classic towers,
And marbled clouds go scudding by
The many-steepled London sky.
And girls in slacks remember Dad,
And oafish louts remember Mum,
And sleepless children's hearts are glad.
And Christmas-morning bells say 'Come!'
Even to shining ones who dwell

During this segment preceding the debate episode, Parky and Kenneth Williams got into a brief, heated exchange over the conduct of the trade union movement, and social and political ideologies more generally. Although by today's standards there wasn't too much in it, it garnered such a reaction that Kenneth was invited back to debate with union leader Jimmy Reid for a special show. In this case, both Parkinson and Kenneth Williams showed their professionalism, in that neither allowed things to escalate, and KW himself defused any tension with a brilliantly over the top, "I've never been so insulted!"
Otherwise it's an interesting combination of guests, with Sir John appearing to have a great time. It ends with a poignant reading, by Kenneth Williams and Maggie Smith, of John Betjeman's Death in Leamington.
In a subsequent retrospective, Michael Parkinson stated that this episode was from late 1972, but it may have been early in 1973.

Late Flowering Lust was a BBC production which featured the dance troupe 'Adventures in Motion Pictures' choreographed to a select few poems of Sir John Betjeman's, read by Nigel Hawthorn who assumes the role of the man himself; 'Cousin John', invited to a country house for a relaxing weekend, and finds himself slightly overwhelmed by the younger guests. Filmed at Benington Lordship House and the surrounding area.

John Betjeman
Sir John Betjeman, CBE (/ˈbɛtʃəmən/; 28 August 1906 – 19 May 1984) was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death.
He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture. He began his career as a journalist and ended it as one of the most popular British Poets Laureate and a much-loved figure on British television.
Life
Early life and education
Betjeman was born "John Betjemann". His parents, Mabel (née Dawson) and Ernest Betjemann, had a family firm at 34–42 Pentonville Road which manufactured the kind of ornamental household furniture and gadgets distinctive to Victorians.
He changed his name to the less German-looking "Betjeman" during the First World War. His father's forebears had actually come from the present day Netherlands and had, ironically, added the extra -n during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War to avoid the anti-Dutch sentiment existing at the time more than a century earlier, setting up their home and business in Islington, London.

Let's revisit this theme.
For such a bouncy and catchy theme, it was only used twice. I guess they thought it wasn't needed much but for me, it makes great montage music so I decided to extend it a little. Just added in a bridge section in typical Thomas/Pat/Wommit fashion.

Spleen uncovered, brutally removed.
So wasteful, tasteful, eaten from within.
Stitch him back up so he survives.
Eating intestines to keep ourselves alive.
Thirteen days starving to Death since they bombed this place.
All the roads blocked the forest stocked full of mines.
No, there is no escape!
Half the village died, animals fled.
Plague lurking like a ticking time bomb.
The stench of death.
I won't regret, doctor! Use your craft!
Now amputate my hand so I can eat!
I can eat...
Forced beyond sanity they kept themselves alive. Lost all their dignity.
Forceps, Clamps. Pull him to the ground.
No innocent hands! Every second counts! (Ha ha ha)
Cut! Through his skin thick blood flows.
No anaesthesia as I dig in!
More of them died, putrefied, but the surgeon lived on.
Fed on their organs, limbs, a blood hunger never satisfied.
Soon he realized his raid of Death had come to an end.
No living soul left, for his hunger driven theft. Killed them all!
"But I must eat!
Just a little piece of me!
Come to daddy!"
He must eat!
Twenty days almost starved to Death in this forsaken place.
Found by soldiers who brought him back, he was safe.
Comatose, little did he know what horrors slowly crawled upon him once he
(a)rose. "Severe war traumas" he was told.
Mouth guard. Strap. Pull him to the ground.
No innocent hands! Every second counts.
He ate his own tongue. Thick blood flows.
"We are losing him!" Heart fails.
So wasteful, tasteful, eaten from within.
This blood hunger grown to be a part of him.
Never satisfied, in his last moment realized,
