The Victorian era was one of the most remarkable in British history; it saw The Industrial Revolution, the growth of major cities, the birth of the British Empire, and huge advances in medicine, transport, and education. It was also a time when harsh working conditions, child cruelty, and desperate poverty blighted the lives of the majority of the people of the country. Incorporating rare footage from the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this film presents an uncomplicated picture of the era, focusing on aspects of everyday life.

How Jane Eyre Scandalised Victorian High Society | Literary Classics | Absolute History
Jane Eyre was released in 1847 and is considered a masterpiece of literature, offering a critique and celebration of Victorian society. Brontë stunned the aristocratic Victorian elite by boldly criticizing prevailing Victorian ideals in her novel, crafting a love story that defied conventional expectations. Charlotte Bronte, the author, was born in 1816 and grew up in a household marked by sickness and death, losing her mother at a young age. Charlotte's early education included a harsh experience at the Cowbridge Clergy Daughters School, which influenced her depiction of Lowood in Jane Eyre.

When Queen Victoria stepped onto the throne of Great Britain and Ireland in 1837, gone were the days when the monarch had supreme authority over the kingdom. Victoria ruled at the head of a government with which she was meant to converse, debate, and ultimately guide, and it was a job she sometimes struggled to perform. Victoria described herself as an emotional creature and blamed her gender for what she believed were her shortcomings as a monarch.

People often romanticize the Victorian Era as a time of class, aesthetic, and wonder when in reality, you're much better off in the 21st century than you could ever hope to be in the 1800s. From your water to your wallpaper, death lurked around every corner. Public health was such a problem that male tradesmen and laborers of the working class had life expectancies of 25 and 22 respectively. But no worries, if you do ever happen to find yourself in the unfortunate cesspool that is Victorian London, I'm here to teach you all the essentials you'll need to know to survive!
Mike Dash's article on Two Penny Hangovers: https://mikedashhistory.com/2021/05/19/the-twopenny-hangover/
NOTES:
My comment on corsets being dangerous wasn't meant to be a blanket statement for all corset use. While certainly not always dangerous, when the practice was taken to the extremes (aka tight lacing), permanent ribcage and organ deformation could occur (which is the picture I showed in the video). There are skeletons in museums showing the results: https://www.rcseng.ac.uk/library-and-publications/library/blog/effects-of-the-corset/
I've also been getting a lot of comments on the life expectancies of 25 and 22 being misleading because it includes childhood mortality. It's actually not misleading at all. All I did was a balance of probability. If you are older than the life expectancy of one group, then you would statistically be more likely to be dead at that point in time than you would for the other group with a higher life expectancy. It's basic statistics. Infants are still a part of the equation and you have to account for them because if you were to roll the dice to see if you'd be alive at the age of 26 for example, infant mortalities would affect that outcome.
Also: Some people are mishearing my line at 6:18, I'm not saying mummies had brains, the line was, "oh my god, look, he's got no brain, that's crazy."

I've made videos here before, and older locals will know what is coming, but for most people the reveal in this time shift will be a huge surprise, unless you read this description first!
Lincoln College is situated on a large campus just to the east of the city centre, on the north side of Monks Road. The street layout of this area dates mainly to the medieval and Victorian periods, although Monks Road itself lies roughly along the line of a Roman road that left the town through the lower east gate, somewhere near the bottom of the current Lindum Hill.
This area was known as Butwerk during the high medieval period, and is an important suburb to the east of the city centre today. But after the high medieval period the area declined, and reverted back to enclosed fields for a time, and some pre-1842 boundaries can still be found. These include the eastern boundary of the Gibney building, built in 1885, and the eastern section of Cathedral Street.
The oldest surviving building in the area is the Sessions House at the bottom of Lindum Hill, built in 1805-8 as the magistrates court. The area expanded greatly again during the Victorian period, with much terraced housing built on both sides of Monks Road, to house the thousands of workers employed in the rapidly expanding heavy industry to the south of the area. The cattle market, shown in the old photo from the 1930s, was moved into the area in 1848, and remained until 1968. I can just remember it as a child.
The Sessions House, and the old Victorian Gaol to the east, are now part of the Lincoln College Campus, as is the former fire station on Monks Road that features in its own time shift video. The campus has undergone huge changes in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, indeed it is ongoing today. The college my son attended recently is very different to the one I was a mature student at in the mid-1990s.
