The history of the Mass Rapid Transit system of Singapore commences with its planning in the 1960s, leading to its opening in 1987 with the launch of the 6km section of the North South Line from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh. It now has 5 lines in operation (as of 22 December 2013) with a total combined route length of 148.9km (92.52mi) and 102 stations. The Light Rail Transit which opened in 1999 acts as a feeder service to the MRT network.
Construction of backbone network
Conceptualisation
The idea of constructing a rapid transit line in the country was initiated in 1967, when a four-year State and City Planning study conducted by the Singapore government and the United Nations Development Programme. It was part of an urban renewal and development project which aimed to formulate a long-term comprehensive concept plan for guiding the country's future physical development. It was concluded that physical land constraints faced by the island nation, was not able to accommodate more roads to meet the rise in transportation demands. It was noted that the city state needed a rail transit system by 1992.
The Singapore dollar or dollar (Malay: Ringgit Singapura, sign: $; code: SGD) is the official currency of Singapore. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively S$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is divided into 100 cents.
Between 1845 and 1939, Singapore used the Straits dollar.
This was replaced by the Malayan dollar, and, from 1953, the Malaya and British Borneo dollar, which were issued by the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya and British Borneo.
Singapore continued to use the common currency upon joining Malaysia in 1963, but only two years after Singapore's expulsion and independence from Malaysia in 1965, the monetary union between Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei broke down.
Singapore established the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore, on 7 April 1967 and issued its first coins and notes. Nevertheless, the Singapore dollar was exchangeable at par with the Malaysian ringgit until 1973, and interchangeability with the Brunei dollar is still maintained.
Pearl smuggler Matt Gordon (Fred MacMurray) finds romance with Linda Grahame (Ava Gardner) just before the start of World War II. He proposes to her, and she accepts. However, when the Japanese attack Singapore, the church where she is waiting to marry him is bombed; Gordon searches frantically in the wreckage, but cannot find her. He is forced to sail away on his schooner.
With the end of the war, Gordon returns after five years and is met by Deputy Commissioner Hewitt (Richard Haydn), who is convinced he has returned for a hidden cache of pearls. So are Gordon's old criminal associates, Mr. Mauribus (Thomas Gomez) and his underling Sascha Barda (George Lloyd). Mauribus offers to buy the pearls, but Gordon denies he has any.

What Happens To Retired MRT Trains? How Singapore Gives Them New Life
In 2023, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore decommissioned about twelve 1st- to 3rd-generation fleets of North-South and East-West Lines trains to make way for newer train models.
About 2,600 tonnes of train parts were disposed of - but LTA has been finding ways to reuse these parts to cut waste and keep the trains’ history alive.

This video will show you the entire history of the Mass Rapid Transit System of Singapore and the future of it. This system has been transporting commuters for years. I take the MRT often. Hope you enjoy!
The game used in this video is Mini Metro. It is a game where you build your metro and prevent your stations from overcrowding. There is a creative mode where you can create your own stations and own lines.
Mass Rapid transit is owned by SMRT. SBS Transit owns Downtown and North East Lines.
Have you ever wondered about the names of the MRT stations in Singapore? Who is Tan Kah Kee and why is there an MRT station named after him? Why is one-north named one-north? And is Farrer Park and Farrer Road MRT the same station?!
Nani.
