Singin The Blues - Bix Beiderbecke
The Frankie "Tram" Trumbauer Orchestra feat. Bix Beiderbecke - Singin' the Blues. The first minute of the song is a sax solo by Trumbauer. The second minute is Bix's cornet solo. The third minute features a short clarinet solo by Jimmy Dorsey, who was the clarinetist in Trumbauer's Orchestra at that time. The guitarist on this track is Eddie Lang. This song is considered a jazz classic because Bix and, to a lesser degree, Tram were able to make a slow-tempo jazz ballad swing. This ability to make slow-tempo swinging jazz would later be emulated by jazz musicians ranging from Lester Young to John Coltrane to Miles Davis.

Bix Beiderbecke - Rhythm King (1928)
Performed by: Bix Beiderbecke
Full Song Title: Rhythm King
Recorded in: 1928
Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke was an American jazz cornetist, jazz pianist, and composer.
With Louis Armstrong and Muggsy Spanier, Beiderbecke was one of the most influential jazz soloists of the 1920s. His turns on "Singin' the Blues" (1927) and "I'm Coming, Virginia" (1927), in particular, demonstrated an unusual purity of tone and a gift for improvisation. With these two recordings, especially, he helped to invent the jazz ballad style and hinted at what, in the 1950s, would become cool jazz. "In a Mist" (1927), one of a handful of his piano compositions and the only one he recorded, mixed classical influences with jazz syncopation. Beiderbecke also has been credited for his influence, directly, on Bing Cr...

Bix Beiderbecke - I'm Coming Virginia - 1927
Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke (March 10, 1903 -- August 6, 1931) was an American jazz cornetist, jazz pianist, and composer. A native of Davenport, Iowa.
Bix Beiderbecke was one of the great jazz musicians of the 1920's; he was also a child of the Jazz Age who drank himself to an early grave with illegal Prohibition liquor. His hard drinking and beautiful tone on the cornet made him a legend among musicians during his life. The legend of Bix grew even larger after he died. Bix never learned to read music very well, but he had an amazing ear even as a child. His parents disapproved of his playing music and sent him to a military school outside of Chicago in 1921. He was soon expelled for skipping class and became a full-time musician. In 1923 Beiderbecke joined the Wolverine Orchestra and ...

Beiderbecke also has been credited for his influence, directly, on Bing Crosby and, indirectly, via saxophonist Frank Trumbauer, on Lester Young.
A native of Davenport, Iowa, Beiderbecke taught himself to play cornet largely by ear, leading him to adopt a non-standard fingering that some critics have connected to his original sound. He first recorded with a Midwestern jazz ensemble The Wolverines in 1924, after which he played briefly for the Detroit-based Jean Goldkette Orchestra before joining Frankie "Tram" Trumbauer for an extended gig at the Arcadia Ballroom in St. Louis, Missouri. Beiderbecke and Trumbauer both joined Goldkette in 1926. The band toured widely and famously played a set opposite Fletcher Henderson at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City in October 1926. The following year, Trumbauer and Beiderbecke left Detroit to join the best-known and most prestigious dance orchestra in the country: the New York-based Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
Beiderbecke's most influential recordings date from his time with Goldkette and Whiteman, although they were generally recorded under his own name or Trumbauer's. The Whiteman period also marked a precipitous decline in Beiderbecke's health, brought on by the demand of the bandleader's relentless touring and recording schedule in combination with Beiderbecke's persistent alcoholism. A few stints in rehabilitation centers, as well as the support of Whiteman and the Beiderbecke family in Davenport, did not check Beiderbecke's decline in health. He left the Whiteman band in 1930 and the following summer died in his Queens apartment at the age of 28.
His death, in turn, gave rise to one of the original legends of jazz. In magazine articles, musicians' memoirs, novels, and Hollywood films, Beiderbecke has been reincarnated as a Romantic hero, the "Young Man with a Horn". His life has been portrayed as a battle against such common obstacles to art as family and commerce, while his death has been seen as a martyrdom for the sake of art. The musician-critic Benny Green sarcastically called Beiderbecke "jazz's Number One Saint," while Ralph Berton compared him to Jesus. The historical Beiderbecke, meanwhile, is the subject of scholarly controversy regarding his true name, the cause of his death, and the importance of his contributions to jazz.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I have. You can also buy the song on iTunes.
Best wishes,
Stu

In 1923 Beiderbecke joined the Wolverine Orchestra and recorded with them the following year. Bix was influenced a great deal by the Original Dixieland Jass Band, but soon surpassed their playing. In late 1924 Bix left the Wolverines to join Jean Goldkette's Orchestra, but his inability to read music eventually resulted in him losing the job. In 1926 he spent some time with Frankie Trumbauer's Orchestra where he recorded his solo piano masterpiece "In a Mist". He also recorded some of his best work with Trumbauer and guitarist, Eddie Lang, under the name of Tram, Bix, and Eddie.
Bix was able to bone up on his sight-reading enough to re-join Jean Goldkette's Orchestra briefly, before signing up as a soloist with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra. Whiteman's Orchestra was the most popular band of the 1920's and Bix enjoyed the prestige and money of playing with such a successful outfit, but it didn't stop his drinking. In 1929 Bix's drinking began to catch up with him. He suffered from delirium tremens and he had a nervous breakdown while playing with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, and was eventually sent back to his parents in Davenport, Iowa to recover. It should be noted that Paul Whiteman was very good to Bix during his struggles. He kept Bix on full pay long after his breakdown, and promised him that his chair was always open in the Whiteman Orchestra, but, Bix was never the same again, and never rejoined the band.
He returned to New York in 1930 and made a few more records with his friend Hoagy Carmichael and under the name of Bix Beiderbecke and his Orchestra. But mainly, he holed himself up in a rooming house in Queens, New York where he drank a lot and worked on his beautiful solo piano pieces "Candlelight", "Flashes", and "In The Dark" (played here by Ralph Sutton; Bix never recorded them). He died at age 28 in 1931 during an alcoholic seizure. The official cause of death was lobar pneumonia and edema of the brain.

The Best Inxs Albums Of All Time 💚
One of the biggest 80s bands, Australia's INXS is also considered one of the best bands of all time. Since theyre such an influential band, lets rank the best INXS albums, with the help of your votes. INXS, fronted by lead singer Michael Hutchence, blended their synth-heavy dance tunes with the Stoney, sax-driven blues of their early years as a pub band. While early releases like Shabooh Shoobah (1982) and Listen Like Thieves (1985) put them on the alternative rock map, it wasnt until Kick (1987) that the Aussie band became a household name. This INXS discography is ranked from best to worst, so the top INXS albums can be found at the top of the list. To make it easy for you, we haven't included INXS singles, EPs, or compilations, so everything you see here should only be studio albums. If ...

If you think the greatest INXS album isn't high enough on the list, then be sure to vote for it so it receives the credit it deserves. This list of popular INXS CDs has been voted on by music fans around the world, so the order of this list isn't just one person's opinion.Make sure you don't just vote for critically acclaimed albums; if you have a favorite INXS album, then vote it up, even if it's not necessarily the most popular....more

Music icons INXS are releasing a career-spanning The Very Best compilation album on October 31st through UMTV. The Very Best will transport listeners through the band's worldwide hits of the past and present.
The Very Best will be released as 1CD and 2CD + DVD deluxe releases. 1CD is a neat collection of, strictly, hits including 'Need You Tonight', 'Original Sin', 'What You Need', 'Beautiful Girl', 'Kick' and 'Suicide Blonde'. The deluxe 3 disc package is a far more comprehensive collection, the type of which has never been seen in INXS history. This package covers hits, fan favourites, remixes and mashups, live, rare and unreleased bonus material and a DVD with full 45 minute documentary and award winning promos. It should be noted that the documentary features unseen interview footage of the late great Michael Hutchence, alongside a very recent interview with the Farriss brothers individually.
With a career spanning over thirty years, INXS are one of the biggest rock groups in the world today. The Sydney band who originally made waves down under in 1982 with 'The One Thing' overcame the tyranny of distance to make their way into the American Top Thirty with the same song. The band's UK impact was felt when the single 'Need You Tonight' from the album 'Kick' was released in 1987, peaking at number two and catapulted lead singer Michael Hutchence into the spotlight.
One in a rare line of frontmen to have become such a musical icon, Hutchence's life has been well documented in the media. His career and personal life has been reported to be packed full with the stuff that true rock n roll legends are made of -- wild times, beautiful women, countless awards and iconic look made him the ultimate 80s and 90s sex symbol around the world. Michael Hutchence lived the rock and roll life style to the extreme as INXS continued their success in the UK charts, until November 1997 when Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney.
The band decided to take a year hiatus but re-grouped to perform with guest vocalists including Jimmy Barnes (1998) and Jon Stevens (2000) for the Sydney Olympics.
The story of INXS continued in 2005 as they searched the US for a new guest vocalist in the show 'Rock Star: INXS', where J.D. Fortune was chosen from thousands of potential singers to front the band. Since then, INXS released the album 'Original Sin' which featured the likes of John Mayer, Rob Thomas, Tricky and Nikka Costa on guest vocals.
Having had tracks sampled by everyone from Big Pun feat. Beenie Man ('Make Me Sweat') to Rogue Traders ('One of My Kind') and most recently by Professor Green with his Number 3 UK hit 'I Need You Tonight', INXS has proved that their music is still as relevant now as it was three decades ago.
To date, INXS has sold over a staggering 30 million records worldwide, achieved 6 consecutive Top 10 UK and US albums, 23 UK hit singles, countless awards from peers and fans alike, and have performed over 5000 shows to over 25 million people in over 40 countries. The INXS stats speak for themselves: INXS are Australia's greatest music export.
