The cornet/ˈkɔːrnɪt/ is a brass instrument very similar to the trumpet, distinguished by its conical bore, compact shape, and mellower tone quality. The most common cornet is a transposing instrument in B♭, though there is also a soprano cornet in E♭. Both are unrelated to the renaissance and early baroque cornett.
History
The cornet was initially derived from the post horn around 1820 in France. Among the first manufacturers of modern cornets was Parisian Jean Asté in 1828. Cornets first appeared as separate instrumental parts in 19th century French compositions.
This instrument could not have been developed without the improvement of piston valves by Heinrich Stölzel and Friedrich Blühmel. In the early 19th century these two instrument makers almost simultaneously invented the valves still used today. They jointly applied for a patent and were granted this for a period of ten years. The first notable virtuoso player was Jean-Baptiste Arban, who studied the cornet extensively and published La grande méthode complète de cornet à piston et de saxhorn, commonly referred to as the Arban method, in 1864. Up until the early 20th century, the trumpet and cornet coexisted in musical ensembles. Symphonic repertoire often involves separate parts for trumpet and cornet. As several instrument builders made improvements to both instruments, they started to look and sound more alike. The modern day cornet is used in brass bands, concert bands, and in specific orchestral repertoire that requires a more mellow sound.
Cornet is an outdoor concrete and steel sculpture of a cornet by David Adickes, located in the Strand Historic District of Galveston, Texas, in the United States. Modeled after a cornet purchased at an antique shop in New Orleans, the 20 feet (6.1m) by 26 feet (7.9m) replica originally served as a stage prop at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Adickes converted the prop into a freestanding sculpture for installation in Galveston in 1986.
Description and history
Cornet, designed by Native Texan artist David Adickes, is located at 23rd Street and The Strand in Galveston's Strand Historic District. Before being converted into a freestanding sculpture and installed in Galveston in 1986, the cornet served as a stage prop at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Adickes' model was a "turn-of-the-century-style" cornet purchased an at antique shop in New Orleans. The sculpture is made of white concrete over a steel frame and measures 20 feet (6.1m) by 26 feet (7.9m). It features keys, a mouthpiece and spigots, and is mounted on two metal poles.Cornet was surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's Save Outdoor Sculpture! program in 1993.
A Cornet, or Jeu de Tierce, is a compound organ stop, containing multiple ranks of pipes. The individual ranks are most commonly of principal or flute tone quality. In combination, the ranks create a bright tone suggesting the Renaissance brass instrument, the cornett.
The Cornet is primarily used as a solo voice and the ranks of the Cornet follow the harmonic series; 8', 4', 22/3', 2', 13/5'. The 8' rank is stopped while the other ranks are open. The Cornet may contain from two ranks and up, though three, four, and especially five ranks are the most commonly found.
The two-rank version has only the 22/3' and 13/5' ranks, but this combination is more commonly called a Sesquialtera. The three-rank version has the 22/3', 2', and 13/5' ranks; the four-rank version adds the 4' rank. Some Cornets may include more harmonics, such as the seventh (11/7') and in rare cases the Ninth (8/9').
