DIAGNOSE! Interview Series #4 - Anna Häring
The Metropolitan Region of Berlin Brandenburg is almost fully constituted of a productive landscape, the "Kulturland" as it is called in German. The landscape itself and the relationship of the city and its hinterland are constantly changing due to rising demand for food supply as well as in order to cope with the challenges of climate change. Therefore, real transformation across all sectors including agriculture is needed.
Together with Professor Anna Häring, expert on agricultural policies and sustainable supply chains at the HNEE, we are discussing the possibilities of how to engage all actors - farmers, suppliers and consumers - in this transformation. While investigating the role policy making plays in fostering positive development, we start our discussion with how former policy l...

1. Brandenburg is a state of Germany. Brandenburg in northeastern Germany is one of the biggest states in the country. Its capital, Potsdam, was historically the seat of power of the Prussian rulers. Brandenburg is one of Germany’s poorer states. Following unification many factories closed, employment declined, and unemployment increased dramatically, to about one-sixth of the workforce, a level that changed little in the mid- and late 1990s and the first years of the new century.
2. Brandenburg originated in the Northern March in the 900s AD from areas conquered from the Wends, and later became the Margraviate of Brandenburg, a major principality of the Holy Roman Empire, with Albert the Bear as prince-elector. In the 17th century Brandenburg came under the rule of the House of Hohenzollern, the rulers of Prussia, who established Brandenburg-Prussia to become the core of the Kingdom of Prussia. Brandenburg became the Province of Brandenburg in 1815, a province within the kingdom and later within the Free State of Prussia. Brandenburg was established as a state in 1945 after World War II by the Soviet army administration in Allied-occupied Germany, and became part of the German Democratic Republic in 1947. Brandenburg was dissolved in 1952 during administrative reforms and its territory divided into the districts of Potsdam, Cottbus, Frankfurt, Neubrandenburg, and Schwerin, but was re-established in 1990 following German reunification, and became one of the Federal Republic of Germany's new states.
3. Potsdam is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Brandenburg. It directly borders the German capital, Berlin, and is part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. Potsdam was a residence of the Prussian kings and the German Kaiser until 1918.
4. Sanssouci was the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, in Potsdam, near Berlin. It is often counted among the German rivals of Versailles. While Sanssouci is in the more intimate Rococo style and is far smaller than its French Baroque counterpart, it too is notable for the numerous temples and follies in the park.
5. Babelsberg, in the south-eastern part of Potsdam, was a major film production studio before the 1930s and has enjoyed success as a major center of European film production since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Filmstudio Babelsberg is the oldest large-scale film studio in the world.
6. The huge variety of historic palaces and gardens provide an impressive setting on each visit to Brandenburg. In and around Potsdam alone, visitors can marvel at 77 palaces and castles surrounded by wide landscape gardens.
7. Brandenburg's most impressive calling card is its expansive nature reserves. A third of the state is protected land, with numerous rivers, around 3,000 lakes, tree-lined roads, and old-growth forests providing a playground for nature-loving tourists. 15 large protected areas were designated following Germany's reunification. Each of them is provided with state-financed administration and a park ranger staff, who guide visitors and work to ensure nature conservation.

With 3.9 Million inhabitants make it the most populous city proper of the European Union. It is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, and contiguous with Potsdam, Brandenburg's capital. The two cities are at the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region, which is Germany's third-largest metropolitan region after the Rhine-Ruhr and Rhine-Main regions. Berlin straddles the banks of the River Spree, which flows into the River Havel in the western borough of Spandau. Among the city's main topographical features are the many lakes. Checkpoint Charlie (or "Checkpoint C") was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. East German leader Walter Ulbricht agitated and manoeuvred to get the Soviet Union's permission to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stop emigration and defection westward through the Border system, preventing escape from East Berlin into West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. After the reunification of Germany, the building at Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction.

While investigating the role policy making plays in fostering positive development, we start our discussion with how former policy landscapes still exist and impact Berlin and Brandenburg today. Furthermore, talking about the role of technology for future agricultural practices, the interview gives insight into the challenges of combining sustainable agriculture on the one hand with the city's growing and changing food demand on the other. Touching on the transdisciplinary projects Professor Häring is working on we address the question of how to promote mutual understanding between producer and consumer and how this will influence the relationship of the urban and the rural, as one of the most important questions we might have to address in the future, where agriculture is not only part of the food system but also is crucial for the cultivating our ecological environments.

Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. It's 3,769,495 (2019) inhabitants make it the most populous city proper of the European Union. The city is one of Germany's 16 federal states. It is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, and contiguous with Potsdam, Brandenburg's capital. The two cities are at the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region, which is, with about six million inhabitants and an area of more than 30,000 km², Germany's third-largest metropolitan region after the Rhine-Ruhr and Rhine-Main regions.
Berlin straddles the banks of the River Spree, which flows into the River Havel (a tributary of the River Elbe) in the western borough of Spandau. Among the city's main topographical features are the many lakes in the western and southeastern boroughs formed by the Spree, Havel, and Dahme rivers (the largest of which is Lake Müggelsee).
First documented in the 13th century and situated at the crossing of two important historic trade routes, Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417–1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933), and the Third Reich (1933–1945). Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality in the world.
Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media, and science. Its economy is based on high-tech firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations, and convention venues. Berlin serves as a continental hub for air and rail traffic and has a highly complex public transportation network.
The metropolis is a popular tourist destination. Significant industries also include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, clean tech, biotechnology, construction, and electronics.
