Harold Budd (born May 24, 1936) is an American avant-garde composer and poet. He was born in Los Angeles, and raised in the Mojave Desert. He has developed a style of playing piano he terms "soft pedal".
Education and academic career
Budd's career as a composer began in 1962. In the following years, he gained a notable reputation in the local avant-garde community. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Southern California (having studied under Ingolf Dahl) with a degree in musical composition. As he progressed, his compositions became increasingly minimalist. Among his more experimental works were two drone music pieces, "Coeur d'Orr" and "The Oak of the Golden Dreams". After composing a long-form gong solo titled "Lirio", he felt he had reached the limits of his experiments in minimalism and the avant-garde. He retired temporarily from composition in 1970 and began a teaching career at the California Institute of the Arts.[1]
"The road from my first colored graph piece in 1962 to my renunciation of composing in 1970 to my resurfacing as a composer in 1972 was a process of trying out an idea and when it was obviously successful abandoning it. The early graph piece was followed by the Rothko orchestra work, the pieces for Source Magazine, the Feldman-derived chamber works, the pieces typed out or written in longhand, the out-and-out conceptual works among other things, and the model drone works (which include the sax and organ "Coeur d'Orr" and "The Oak of the Golden Dreams", the latter based on the Balinese "Slendro" scale which scale I used again 18 years later on "The Real Dream of Sails").
Chiang Mai (/ˈtʃjɑːŋˈmaɪ/, from Thai:เชียงใหม่[tɕʰiəŋ màj], Lanna:ᨩ᩠ᨿᨦᩉ᩠ᨾᩲ᩵[t͡ɕīaŋ.màj]) sometimes written as "Chiengmai" or "Chiangmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand. It is the capital of Chiang Mai Province and was a former capital of the Kingdom of Lan Na (1296–1768), which became a tributary state of the Kingdom of Chiang Mai from 1774 to 1939. It is 700km (435mi) north of Bangkok and is situated amongst the highest mountains in the country. The city sits astride the Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River.
Chiang Mai means "new city" and was so named because it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom when it was founded in 1296, succeeding Chiang Rai, the former capital founded in 1262.
Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded between the ASEAN nations and the "+3" countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai was one of three Thai cities contending for Thailand's bid to host the World Expo 2020 (the others were Chonburi and Ayutthaya). Ayutthaya, however, was the city ultimately chosen by the Thai Parliament to register for the international competition.

There are 2 stalls right next to each other, the one in this video is the end/further stall but both spots are great. We have also filmed rhe stall right next to this one in our Chiang Rai video.
🛌 Our Chiang Mai accommodation is located in Astra Condo
https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/33648370
You can find listings on Airbnb as there are multiple apartments and it's a popular stay for both foreigners and locals alike although note that Airbnbs are a legal grey area in Thailand. Catching a Grab or tuk tuk from this accommodation is very easy tho and there are plenty of great places to eat nearby which are in walking distance including a night bazaar.
🛕 Temples visited
Wat Phan Tao & Wat Chedi Luang are very close to one another inside Chiang Mai Old City. Remember to dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees (for both males and females) and also remove your shoes before entering inside any temple hall.

Chiang Mai has definitely become one of our favourite cities in Thailand. Surrounded by lush green mountains this ancient city blurs lines between the old and the new. We ride to Doi Inthanon National Park to check out the highest peak in all of Thailand. The Old City of Chiang Mai has many stunning temples. Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh leave us completely spellbound. Northern Thailand is known for it’s epic cuisine. We try out a bunch of local delicacies at the very famous Tong Tem Toh Restaurant in the Nimman area. And finally, the over-the-top absolutely indulgent weekend markets of Chiang Mai - the Wua Lai Walking Street and the Phae Walking Street offer never-ending stimuli to your brain! Food, clothes, trinkets, antiques, handicrafts, entertainment - they’ve got it all and then some! We honestly wish we had some more time in this kick ass city!

We've been to Thailand a few times before, but it's our first time visiting Chiang Mai. Located in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a laid-back modern city that still has a lot of historical and cultural sites plus tons of delicious food.
🍜 Our lunch spot doesn't have an English name but you can find it here:
ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเสวย โจ๊กโตเกียว
https://maps.app.goo.gl/prhWazDJ58uevx2d7

Chiang Mai is located in the northwest of Thailand. We highlight the best things to do in & around Chiang Mai:
10. Eat the traditional dish Khao Soi
This creamy yellow curry noodle soup comes with a choice of chicken or beef, and you can find it in nearly any restaurant in the Chiang Mai.
9. Tour the Buddhist Temples of the old town
There are over 300 Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai and many of them are located inside the historic old town, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phan Tao, and Wat Chedi Luang.
8. Visit an elephant sanctuary
We visited Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai, a sanctuary that is committed to education and rehabilitation of elephants that have been abused by the tourism industry.
☑️ Elephant Nature Park: https://www.elephantnaturepark.org/enp/visit-volunteer
7. Join a cooking class
We joined a half-day cooking class, during which we prepared 3 different dishes; a Thai soup, a curry, and Pad Thai. For each dish, there were different options to choose from for your proteins and flavors.
☑️ Chiang Mai cooking class we joined: https://www.getyourguide.com/chiang-mai-l271/chiang-mai-authentic-thai-cooking-class-and-farm-visit-t187629/?partner_id=57UJ5GF&utm_medium=online_publisher&placement=content-middle&cmp=ChiangMai_video
6. Cruise down the Mae Ping River
The Mae Ping River is the main river running through Chiang Mai and offers a quick escape from the city. You can rent a kayak and cruise down yourself or join a 2 hour boat tour that takes you past beautiful scenery around Chiang Mai.
☑️ Mae Ping River Cruise: https://maepingrivercruise.com/
5. Day tour to Doi Inthanon National Park
Home to Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon National Park is about a 1.5 hour drive from the city. The park is filled with beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails, viewpoints, and twin pagodas near the summit.
☑️ Doi Inthanon Day Tour from Chiang Mai: https://www.getyourguide.com/chiang-mai-l271/doi-inthanon-national-park-small-group-full-day-tour-t318498/?partner_id=57UJ5GF&utm_medium=online_publisher&placement=content-middle&cmp=ChiangMai_video
4. Shop at the local Talat Warorot
This historic market opened in the early 20th century and is a great place to buy clothes, souvenirs, local food and spices. Open daily from 6am to 7pm.
3. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
The sacred Doi Suthep temple is about 15 km or 9 miles outside of Chiang Mai. The temple also offers beautiful views of the city and the surrounding area.
2. Drive the Samoeng loop
This 100km or 62 miles route is a pretty easy ride with spectacular views winding through the Mae Sa Valley and the Samoeng Forest. We recommend making a few stops along the way: the Mae Sa waterfalls, botanical gardens, and the Samoeng viewpoint.
1. Chiang Mai Sunday Night Market
The largest market in Chiang Mai is the Sunday Night Market. Starting from the Tha Pae Gate, the market runs along the entire length of the Ratchadamnoen Road from 5pm until around 10.30pm. It’s also possible to visit the Saturday Night Market or the Chang Puak Gate Market on any other day of the week.
