내가 용서 못하는 두 가지 부류가 있어. 첫 번째는 날 찌르려던 넘, 두 번째는 날 찔렀던 놈.
There are two types of people I won't forgive. The first, is someone who tried to betray me, and the second, is someone who did betray me.

—Baek Seongjun

Seongjun Baek (백성준, Baek Seong-jun) was one of the main antagonists of How to Fight/Viral Hit. He was a widely known cooking NewTuber who had starred in many television shows and made Japanese cuisine immensely popular in South Korea with his restaraunt Omakase June[1]. He was the president of XJ Company, a Company recruiting NewTube content creators with the motive of using them for money laundering. Before starting his career as a Newtuber in Seoul, South Korea, he used to reside in Tokyo, Japan, where he became the leader of the Blue Dragon Train of Kantō (青龍列車, Ao ryū ressha) which later integrated with the Kawaguchi Clan (川口組, Kawaguchi-gumi). As a Yakuza, he earned the nickname Waraioni(笑い鬼).

Appearance[]

Baek Seongjun had a tall, muscular build, and also cauliflower ears, seemingly as a result of the training and fighting he has been through. He was noted to be very good looking, having blue eyes with long eyelashes, thin arched eyebrows and slightly tinted lips.

He had dark blue hair that reaches below his chin, which was tied at the back in a half bun, with a few side fringes. After getting exposed by Yoo Hobin for his lies and the illegal activities he was involved in, Seongjun ended up cutting his long hair in order to appease his subscribers. He donned the short undercut hairstyle he had before, prior to his death.

Attire[]

When in his restaurant, "Omakase June", he was usually seen wearing his chef uniform, which consisted of usually black pants and a blue haori with fish scale patterns, held together by a white belt. It was sometimes worn over a white skin-tight shirt. The haori's sleeves were held by tasuki, in order to keep them from getting in the way of his work. When not working, he was usually wearing a pair of jeans and a plain white shirt. In K☆star convention he was wearing a dark blue suit, which he also appeared in in his dream sequence in chapter 102. He was almost always seen wearing blue clothing, presumably because it's his favorite color.

Tattoos[]

Seongjun had a full body tattoo which stretches from below his neck to his wrists and ankles. The tattoo had a very complicated design which suggests that it took a long time to complete. His arms and legs were covered in outlines of koi fish, which could be a representation of his ambition to climb higher and achieve true power, as in Japanese myth, the Koi must swim up a waterfall through the dragon's gate to turn into a dragon. On his chest, there were two blue oni masks holding blades in their mouths. Covering a major part of his torso was a recreation of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's ukiyo-e "One Hundred and Eight Heroes from the Chinese Tale, The Water Margin: Zhang Shun, alias White Stripe in the Waves", where the character breaks through the Yongjin water gate under a rain of enemy arrows.

The tattoos on his torso were also repeated on the back. Symbols of water and waves were present, as well as on his arms and legs. On his shoulders, there were red spider lilies. The flower was often used to symbolize final goodbyes and death.

Personality[]

Baek Seongjun was a widely known NewTuber who, according to Jihyeok had starred in many television shows and had made Japanese cuisine immensely popular in South Korea. To the general public, he had maintained a spotless image of being a well mannered, kind and genial man who had a pristine life style. However, in reality all of these was a façade that he maintains to pursue his dream of gaining a seat in politics. In reality, Baek Seongjun was a two faced man. He was obsessed with gaining money and authority. He wouldn't think twice before killing or ruining someone's life who threatens his ambitions. He approached gullible people with the motive of gaining profit from their alliance and would quickly toss them aside if he had nothing left to exploit from them. He is also ruthless to those who had failed to follow his order or endangered him in any way. This is seen in the case of when he made Lee Hyeonsu bathe in hot oil when he failed to defeat Yoo Hobin and when he crippled Jeong Chan for not being able to stop Minjeong from ratting them out. He was also quite twisted and insensitive as he humiliated Hobin's mother just to get back at him.

Sly, in a sense, he had immediately revealed his past as a Yakuza member to his subscribers in the beginning of his NewTube career to prevent any sort backlash he may face, if revealed by someone else. His clever scheme worked and his past as a Yakuza made him a novelty among the ignorant masses.

However, his flashback revealed that formerly Baek Seongjun was actually somewhat of a decent man with a sense of honour, and showed similarities with Yoo Hobin. He loved and cherished his mother, and also considered his coach a father figure. After getting betrayed by his coach and losing his mother, Seongjun's obsession with money started. He began thinking that he had to make more money in order to regain his happiness, since it was what got him in that mess. The continuous chain of death of his loved ones starting by his mother to his father and his comrades made him descend into madness.

Seongjun was someone who would give up anything to achieve his ambitions, including his ability to care about other human beings. However, there were moments where he seemed more human, stopping himself from heavily injuring high schoolers, and hesitating to hurt an old woman. He saw part of himself in Yoo Hobin and saw him as a possible successor when he was trying to recruit him in the XJ Company.

It was eventually revealed that Seongjun still tries to keep the promise that he gave to his dying comrade of becoming happy and climbing higher.

History[]

Seongjun was seen as a diligent Japanese cuisine chef who actually revealed himself in his first stream to be an old member of a Yakuza that left to "better himself." 244 revealed to the Congressman and the dentist beside him Seongjun's story from an outsider's perspective.

Seongjun's backstory revealed that before turning into a ruthless man whose ambitions revolved around power and money, he previously was a decent person. He deeply loved his single mother who worked as a hostess to make their ends meet. Him and his mother lived in poverty, thus Seongjun spent most of the time worrying about monetary expenses and bills.

He was actually a promising Judo athlete whose skills in Judo were considered to be on the level of a genius, even being paired with the national team. Being a Korean expat in Japan, Seongjun was looked down on by others. Despite being a Judo prodigy, he didn't particularly enjoy the sport but considered it a good means of earning money. In the flashback, he was shown being close to his coach who was kind to him and considered him as his father figure.

However, later it was revealed that his coach was a two faced person who exploited the money he made from match fixing, back to his own pockets by blackmailing his scared mother. He threatened and took money from Baek Seongjun's mother in exchange of keeping his mouth shut about her son's match fixing scandal. When the truth was revealed, Seongjun was furious over his coach's treachery and his advances towards his mother so he attacked him. During the assault, his coach stabbed his mother in the back and killed her. In anger, Seongjun retaliated by stabbing him back and killing him. Despite murdering his coach, he was not arrested because a man whom he previously called a "third rate yakuza" saved him by taking the blame on his head. It was later revealed that the familiar looking man was actually his biological father.

Distraught over his mother's demise, he aimlessly wandered around before entering the area of the Blue Dragon Train, a biker gang based in Kānto region. He fought the gang and later defeated them single-handedly. Impressed by his strength, they asked him to be their boss which he accepted. Merged with the biker gang, he made lots of money and notoriety which made the Kawaguchi clan approach him. It was an infamous yakuza clan in that area whose leader wanted to hire him as a paid mercenary. Seongjun's thirst for money only seemed to grow and soon he was killing people for a price. One day, the leader approached him to assassinate a member of his group, who had ran away with their money since he wanted to start a new life with his family. He complied and later stabbed the target only to realize later that it was his own father. Brimming with rage and regret, he killed the leader and assaulted the entire group. However, the group later retaliated by murdering his friends in the Blue Dragon Train gang. He took revenge for his friends, but the Yakuza continued their attempts to catch and kill him. Soon enough, he became one of the most wanted criminals in Japan, being chased down by the police during daytime, and the Yakuza at night. At one point, Seongjun stopped fighting and tries his best to blend in, in order to not get caught. While hiding and dwelling on his past, drinking became his only coping mechanism.

One day, he overheard a conversation between a group of men, talking about a smuggling ship in which criminals would sneak in to go to Korea. Seongjun tested this, and found out that it's true. He offered a large sum of money to get on the ship, but is warned that the journey will take months, and that he had to do as the captain says. Seongjun agreed to these terms and got on the ship, but was soon angered and lashed out at the crew who beat him and the other passengers "for not doing things right." He was then interrupted by a familiar figure, who was revealed to be 244.

In Korea, he eventually got into an incident that causes him to be put in the juvenile detention center in Seoul, where he met his first XJ Company co-worker, Han Wangguk. He then proceeds to immediately start a NewTube channel, which he planned back in when he was still in the juvie. To protect his reputation, he then revealed that he was a Yakuza but only revealing half of it. He then got his subscribers' trust by that and became a popular Newtuber until he was, committed to a rivalry with Yoo Hobin, where Hobin eventually comes out on top by revealing his past.

Fighting Prowess[]

Living a harsh life ever since he was born turned him into a ruthless and proficient fighter who wouldn't shy away from using underhanded tactics to win fights. Seongjun said that he did not like combat sports, because they taught people rules that were useless in the real world and restrict them. Based on his experiences, he believed that the point of fighting is to kill. Back when he was working with the Yakuza, he was said to have a talent for killing, sometimes even facing large groups of people and getting through them with stab wounds like it was nothing.

His fighting style was primarily focused on effectiveness, ignoring honor and basic morals. This meant that Seongjun did not think twice before attacking vulnerable spots like the eyes and crotch, which is commonly considered cowardly to do. His fighting style incorporated practical environment use, often using the nearest object and weaponizing it.

Seongjun had an impressive amount of strength, endurance and stamina, going through individual fights with martial artists, and then going against a large group of armed mercenaries, ruthlessly killing them with a metallic pipe, while being covered in multiple stab wounds.

While Seongjun mostly sticked to his brutal and effective fighting style, he still used Judo Techniques.

If section[]

  • Even if Baek Seongjun continued to refuse to go through with the match-fixing, the coach's intentions would someday have been revealed, and even if he had properly reunited with his father, he would eventually have been entangled with the Kawaguchi gang. He was never destined to be happy.
  • If Seongjun was an ordinary 5 million subscribers popular NewTuber , he could have been a good colleague of Hobin.
  • If he could have lived with his parents in a normal way without getting involved with bad people, Seongjun would have been a satisfied and happy man even if he had lived a simple life.
  • If Seongjun had a child, he would never have taught his child judo.
  • If Seongjun's fight with 244/Jinho Lee continues fairly, it is very likely that Seongjun will win considering that Jinho used dirty methods in their first meeting (shooting him) to subdue Seongjun. Jinho also gave up the next fight with Seongjun at the dinner table. Even Yu Hoobin imagined Seongjun's figure when he fought with Jinho.
  • If the war between Seongjun and Jinho continues, it will likely become a big war and it will be difficult to determine the winner between them, considering that both of them are clever and cunning then have strong power connections (Jinho is connected to Taesan, while Seongjun has a hidden collaboration with Hwangyong) . the only reason Seongjun lost to Jinho was because Hobin's presence disrupted Seongjun's plans (indirectly, Hobin was used by Jinho to bring down Seongjun)

  • Seongjun's body is covered with tattoos every time he missed his family badly.
  • From a young age, he'd occasionally wish that he had a brother. In his final moments, he really did think of Hobin, who was a lot like him, as his brother.
  • He's only able to trust himself because he fear's trusting other people, but he used to like developing brotherly bonds and friendships.
  • He has three different types of luxury cars because he likes cars. (Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz).
