On 3 December 2024, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on a television. He accused the Democratic Party, which controls the National Assembly, of supporting North Korea and trying to destroy the country. The martial law stopped all political activities and suspended press freedom.

35 hours have gone by since martial law came to an end.

The Democratic Party and some members of Yoon's People Power Party disagreed with the declaration, causing protests. Later, on 4 December 2024, after security tried to stop the vote, most lawmakers in the National Assembly voted 190-0 to end martial law.[1][2][3]

On [December 4, local time] "South Korea's cabinet ... lifted the martial law", according to the Yonhap news agency; Furthermore, the martial law command [that had members of the military] was broken up by the military (or "the South Korean military has disbanded the martial law command").[4][5] Earlier (December 3), the Martial Law Command was in place and had a leader, General Park An-su (picture); He (said or) made a statement, as early as 11:00 p.m. local time, about details of the martial law.[6][7][8][9][10]
