Although it seems to have struck a chord with many people, to me, The Iron Giant remains better. Wild Robot, to me, in some way, seems to be the story of what it is like to be an autistic mother. The robot in question, Roz, is out of place raising a Gosling after indirectly being part of its parents' demise. Roz's journey seems to involve developing feelings so that she can understand the ways of the jungle. The film seems to be about outcasts coming together and feels very neurodiverse-coded. What surprised me most about the movie was the macabre nature, which must appeal to some adults watching with kids. It is pretty interesting to watch these characters who seem to be learning how to deal with their sense of unique identity. While something like Iron Giant is relevant to Cold War fears and McCarthyist worries, The Wild Robot applies equally to audiences working through complex issues today. Like Brightbill, there are lessons to be learned around working through differences. It is the differences that ultimately lend a hand to a different experience.
It truly may grow on me if I am meant to do watch after watch with my daughter in the coming years. However, I may not have caught on to what has made this so unique in others' eyes.
