Even a goose can fly like a falcon!
The Wild Robot felt so... familial. I have an endless list of movie references in my notes and i'm fine with movies mixing up everything to make something refreshing out of it but I can't quite say it's the case here. The themes of finding meaning, fitting in, parenthood, adoption, sacrifice, family... are heartwarming but I kept hoping it would kick it up a notch because I never really got emotional like I did in a lot of other similar movies. The story's fine though and I think this will probably resonate more with a younger audience.
Up until the second half I admired that every character was actually playing their animal personality and instincts but then they abandon everything and turn into humans disguised as animals (again) and get together like a merry band. It's heartwarming of course and goes with the movie's theme of unity but it felt jarring and eye rolling when they suddenly broke out of character.
More action oriented than what I expected and I enjoyed those sequences for the most part but it felt like an Avengers movie at times when all I really wanted was for the movie to be more character driven. Action kinda put the emotional momentum to a halt for me. I also preferred when it was a single location movie, didn't like it when they added the unnecessary other robots storyline. Remove that from the movie and you have a tighter, more character focused story.
The animation is absolutely stunning, so vibrant and detailed. Enjoyed the characters and I laughed often. The voice cast did a great job there's so many standouts but I have to say Matt Berry is such a gem! Where's the petition to include his voive in every movie? Overall this was still a decent watch and it's refreshing to see a non IP do so well.
