Stanley Scorsese’s review published on Letterboxd:
J. Robert Oppenheimer: You know, I wonder if they’ll laugh when I’m dead? Why am I fighting to live if I’m just living to fight? Why am I trying to see when there ain’t nothing in sight? Why am I trying to give when no one gives me a try? Why am I dying to live if I’m living to die?
I couldn’t think of any quotes to open up at this point, so I decided to start off with a lyric from a song by Tupac and Biggie. I was listening to Runnin’ (Dying to Live) on the way home from work, and I had clips of Oppenheimer playing in my head while listening to the song. Word for word and picturing every scene from that film was like me putting two and two together. I know this is unrelated when it’s hardcore rap and this film is about the father of the atomic bomb, so I know I’m overthinking it. But having those two together stuck with me.
On the way home last night, I talked my wife into watching Oppenheimer since she likes some of Christopher Nolan’s films, including Inception. She doesn’t give a shit about history or science, it was her worst subjects in school and she doesn’t like black and white movies. But I told her it switches from color to black and white for a reason. My mother gave me a copy of the film’s screenplay for Christmas and I was reading some of the scenes while the film was playing in our living room. Thanks for the screenplay, mom!
J. Robert Oppenheimer: I don't know if we can be trusted with such a weapon. But I know the Nazis can't.
