Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer

Well, this was one hell of an experience. Before actually talking about the movie itself, I’ll write a bit about my experience and what it felt like watching Oppenheimer. Reading this part is completely optional.

—————————————————————
So I haven’t stated this before in my reviews, but I love talking about my experiences. And before actually talking about Oppenheimer, I’ll be talking about another experience of mine, which isn’t even about movies whatsoever. Don’t worry though, the nonsense you are about to read is going to make somewhat of a sense in the end.

And out of all the experiences I can talk about, I’ll talk about my first roller coaster experience. Yes, you heard it right. You know, when you are about to experience something that you hadn’t experienced before or had no memory of experiencing, you don’t know what to except. And with no knowledge of what’s to come and my friends insisting that we ride it, we got in line.

After a lot of waiting and listening to the sounds of the roller coasters buzzing by like hell, we were next. The first 30 seconds of the ride were pretty calm actually. It was the next 1 minute and a half that really got my heart racing and made me feel awesome. And you see, that was a one-time experience for me. Something that I couldn’t really feel again no matter how many roller coasters I rode. Sure, they would get my heart pumping but they surely couldn’t make me feel the way I felt when I rode the first one.

And well, watching Oppenheimer was something like that. This was my first IMAX experience after a very, very long time and I couldn’t really remember how my previous IMAX experiences were. Watching Oppenheimer in IMAX was stunning. It was different. While leaving the cinema after having finished the movie I felt just like when I had left that roller coaster. Great, but also somewhat sad that I wouldn’t be able to feel such a feeling again.
—————————————————————

If we were to talk about the movie, Oppenheimer was nothing short of colossal. It felt more grand than Nolan’s other movies. All of his other big works, such as The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, Inception or Tenet felt exceptional as well but not as grand as Oppenheimer. His previous works mostly had some action in them to entertain the viewer thus feeling more like something that you can watch just to be entertained and not feel disappointed in the end. Oppenheimer is nothing like that. It’s about one of the largest and most dangerous inventions in history and it informs the viewer about it. Although it offers quite a lot of impressing visuals and good storytelling, it has little to no entertaining scenes in it, nor action (which you really shouldn’t expect from a biographical movie). It has a whopping runtime of 3 hours which manages to feel like a 6-hour-long epic and the biggest subject that Nolan has tackled to date.

Other than that, the cast was packed (something that goes for almost every single Nolan movie) and the movie just kept throwing all of these familiar faces at you every now and then. Bloody hell, Gary Oldman himself stars in the movie and it ain’t even one of the main characters. Also hoping that at least one of the actors win an Oscar. With a cast like this, it’s almost impossible that none of them wins an award. Rooting for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. myself.

And well, The Trinity Test scene did what it was supposed to do. It being the climax of the movie does make the last 40-something minutes somewhat disappointing but I personally don’t give a shit, it was a spectacular scene and the practical effects were glorious. Also I’m pretty sure that my heart stopped twice just before the initial explosion and the shockwave 20 seconds after that. Not to forget, the sound design in Oppenheimer kicks ass. Music to my ears.

Overall, go see Oppenheimer in IMAX as soon as you can before it goes away from the theatres. I had an amazing experience while watching the movie and it still hasn’t left me while I’m writing this review. Amazing in every way and Nolan’s biggest piece of work to date, a must-watch.
