After the good, but no spectacular Tenet, Christopher Nolan returns with of his more interesting ideas in Oppenheimer. He is usually a director who always delivers on some wild and weird concept, so I was interested to see how he would tackle a biopic. This does still have some of the things Nolan is famous for, but it does feel unique inside of his body of work.
It focuses much more on the characters than his other films, especially recent ones and it worked perfectly as he manages to make these characters very memorable and gives us one of his mos interesting characters in J. Robert Oppenheimer.
The main role belongs to Cillian Murphy and I'm so happy to see him be in a leading role in a movie as big as this as he definitely deserves it, not only becuase he seems like a great and marketable guy, but also because he is a brilliant actor and this role was perfect for him. The supporting cast is also solid with plenty of fantastic actors out of which Robert Downey Jr. is the standout.
Even though RDJ gives a fantastic performance, his section of the movie was the weakest one in my opinion. It just felt unnecessary and with the movie being 3 hours long I would've rather seen this section cut out. Scenes from this storyline are sprinkled throughout the film, but it takes center stage in the third act and that is when this movie slows down for me. Also, I thought a lot of the scenes during the main section of the movie felt a bit rushed and could've done with some space to breathe and that could've been possible if there was more focus on the making of the bomb and not the trial.
The technical aspects and I'm amazed how they did all the effects without CGI and I would love to see a behind the scenes video on how they made all the explosions so realistic.
Overall, this isn't Nolan's best film, but I'm extremely happy he did something very original for his career and that payed off as this will probably be as popular as some of his other classics like Inception, Interstellar and The Dark Knight.
