Assuming the role of the keeper of a supreme knowledge comes with an inevitable burden, Nolan fleshes out the several contexts of said burden in a film of arising nuclear supremacy that explores both the physical and psychological nature of human capacity.
Despite the many monumental and imposing technical achievements, Cillian's pristine eyes and sharp facial frame might be the film's greatest asset. Nolan knows this and pervades the screen so intimately through revealing close-ups of Oppenheimer's piercing gaze and often uncertain expression that one can't help but get drawn into his power-hungry psyche and, most importantly, the haunting implications of his endeavors.
Ultimately, more than a large-scale JFK-esque bio-pic, "Oppenheimer" serves best as a character study with sweeping ambitions about a life in eternal moral ambiguity.
