Magnificent. When the film started and the full frame was finally revealed, I was in such awe at the ginormous and beautiful cinematography piercing my eyeholes. Really enjoyed this scientific and brooding biopic of a complicated figure. The montages felt so enamoring and silence is used to great effect. I was impressed by the unexpected sound design of the explosion scene. What also struck me was the utter hubris and carelessness paired with others’ severity and concern toward nuclear deterrence in the 20th century, and the film makes a case for Oppenheimer’s attitude shift toward caution after the bomb.
And as serious as it is, it’s also exciting; the buildup to the bomb, the way they get you all hype for Albert Einstein, and there’s literally a suiting-up scene. This has become part of a cinematic holiday and I’m delighted to have taken part in the double feature. This is beautiful in 70mm.
